The boss of BMW’s F1 team has refused to rule out speculation that Friday test driver Robert Kubica will be promoted to a race seat next year. Dr Mario Theissen, Motorsport Director at the German squad which still retains the former ‘Sauber’ moniker, admitted that while Nick Heidfeld’s continuing berth is secure, the team is looking around at its alternatives beyond 2006.
“It would be negligent to consider only those drivers who are already under contract,” he said, in comments that are sure to reinvigorate rumours of the uncertainty of Jacques Villeneuve’s ride. Theissen, however, told RTL that all three current BMW Sauber pilots are doing ‘good work’.
“We will decide at the end of the season who will occupy the cockpits in 2007,” he insisted.
