Uncertainty at Renault made Alonso switch to McLaren
Quote selected text Published September 18th, 2006 in Main(GMM) Fernando Alonso says he decided to switch to McLaren for the 2007 season because of uncertainty about Renault’s future in F1.
The world champion’s move was announced just before Christmas last year, as speculation raged that French squad Renault was not committed for the long term.
”I did not know what they were going to do,” Spaniard Alonso, 25, admitted to Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica.
He said: ”It was not clear to me whether they would continue to invest the same money to try to win as they had before.”
Not until the middle of this season did Renault’s new CEO, Carlos Ghosn, pledge the car maker’s future to the sport. Renault also has a new F1 team president in Alain Dassas.
Team chief Flavio Briatore admitted: ”If the stability had been in place then, I think we could have kept (Alonso).
”The timing just wasn’t right.”
