Paul Tracy, The winningest active driver in Champ Car crashed a golf cart last week near his Las Vegas home and fractured his right scapula — putting this week’s season finale at Mexico City in jeopardy.
“It hurts pretty bad, but I’m getting some treatment and I think I’ll be able to qualify and at least start the race,” said Tracy, who is winless in 2007 and currently fifth in the point standings.
“Dr. (Terry) Trammell is sending a doctor friend of his over here today to shoot a muscle relaxer into my shoulder to try and get the inflammation down. Then he wants me to chill for a couple of days and do no therapy.
“I was making pretty good progress Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but I overdid it on Thursday and took about 10 steps backward.”
The 37-year-old veteran suffered a broken leg in his CART debut at Michigan in 1991 and incurred a broken neck at Michigan in 1996.
And his first off-track injury came after he and some pals were jumping sand traps with a golf cart.
“Something broke, the right-front wheel fell off and the golf cart tipped over,” he explained. “It fell on top of me and threw everybody else clear. You don’t have to tell me, it was dumb.”
The layout at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is fast and physical, but Tracy hopes he can handle it.
“If I can get my motion back I should be alright,” he said. “There’s only a couple of left-hand corners and everything else is right-handers, so I’ll be using my left arm a lot more.”
