Sebastien BourdaisWhen Sebastien Bourdais made racing history by becoming the first driver to since Ted Horn to win three consecutive Champ Car World Series titles, he knew the awards and accolades would pile up. This week another was bestowed upon Bourdais as he was nominated for National Speed Sport News’s Economaki Champion of Champions Award Presented by Rockett Brand Racing Fuel.

In its fourth year The Economaki Champion of Champions Award is unique in that it takes champions from racing series throughout North America and decides who is truly the “Champion among the Champions.”

During 2006 Bourdais had a banner year in the Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford, capturing not only his third consecutive series championship, but he also led the series in wins (7), poles (7), podium finishes (11), and laps led (522).The Frenchman showed early in the season that he would be the favorite for the title as he went out and captured four consecutive wins to start the season.

This year’s nominees for the award also include: Jorg Bergmeister (Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype and the American Le Mans Series GT2 classes), John Force, (NHRA Funny Car), Kevin Harvick (NASCAR Busch Series), Sam Hornish Jr. (Indy Racing League), Jimmie Johnson (NASCAR Nextel Cup), Tony Schumacher, (NHRA Top Fuel), Donny Schatz (World of Outlaws) and Josh Wise (USAC).

The Economaki Champion of Champions Award will be presented at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show which takes place in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida on December 14th by National Speed Sport News Editor Chris Economaki at the National Speed Sport News booth.

This award is named in honor of Chris Economaki, the world’s best-known reporter on the auto racing scene and legendary motorsports broadcaster, who also founded National Speed Sport News and has been the Editor and Publisher Emeritus of the publication for more than 50 years.
