Scott Speed, the only American driver in Formula One, was tabbed Wednesday to replace NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson on Team USA’s entry in the Race of Champions Nations Cup in Paris.
Johnson had to withdraw from the race after breaking his wrist over the weekend in a fall from a golf cart. Indy Racing League champion Sam Hornish Jr. declined an invitation to replace Johnson because of the short notice.
Speed then accepted the invite and will team with 2006 Rally America champion and motocross star Travis Pastrana for the United States.
“It was a surprise to be invited, to say the least,” Speed said. “I definitely wasn’t expecting to replace Jimmie Johnson in the Race of the Champions this year.
“Of course, I’m really excited, and I can’t wait to race against all these guys,” he said.
The race is Saturday at the Stade de France, and Johnson will be on hand to support Team USA.
