Michael SchumacherMichael Schumacher’s championship hopes are in tatters after retiring from the lead of the Japanese Grand Prix on lap 37 with engine failure.

It is the Ferrari driver’s first engine failure in a race since the US Grand Prix of 2001. The failure leaves Schumacher ten points behind Alonso with only one race to go.

Schumacher, however, still remains in mathematical contention for the drivers’ title, because Alonso’s Suzuka win will leave them level-pegging on seven wins each this year.

But Renault driver Alonso however only needs to finish eighth at Interlagos to seal his second championship crown.
