A team spokesman on Wednesday played down Fernando Alonso’s accusation that Renault is not helping him to win the 2006 drivers’ championship.
After the 25-year-old suggested that some of his team colleagues will be ‘happy’ if he does not take the number one to McLaren next year, and that the focus is now on the constructors’ title, the spokesman protested: “I don’t know what (Alonso) means.”
“I simply put it down to the frustration of having seen a nice win slipping away from him in Shanghai, when the only crumb of comfort he could take away was in retaking the lead in the constructors’ championship. ”
Renault’s spokesman denied that a rift has developed in the French camp.
“The reality is that the team is gutted (about the result in China). We are not 100 percent behind Fernando, we are 150 percent with him,” he insisted.
