Penske readies to move entire racing operation to Mooresville

Last year Penske Racing announced that it would be moving its IndyCar Series operation from its historic Reading, PA headquarters to a new state-of-the-art facility in Mooresville, NC. With this move, the IndyCar Series Team will be joining the other Penske Performance, Inc. constituents in the NASCAR and ALMS Series under one 424,697-square foot roof.

The IndyCar Series Team will share approximately 56,000 square feet of work space with the ALMS Team. Both Teams will have their own engineering offices, car assembly bays and locker rooms and will share a fabrication shop; machine shop; parts department; gearbox, crack check and sub-assembly area; as well as the administrative and reception areas.
“Thus far, this has been a relatively seamless transition,” said Jerry Breon, Facilities Administrator for Penske Performance, Inc. “We hope to begin occupying some of the new spaces by the end of the month, and our target date for the completion of this project will be the middle of November. Our organization is constantly evolving and I think that this new space is an ideal example of how we look to change with it. This new facility should provide exactly what the Team needs as we look to the future.”
While the facilities are in the process of being completed, that’s only half of the equation for the IndyCar Series Team’s relocation to North Carolina. There is, of course, the matter of moving 39 employees from Pennsylvania to their new homes. This phase of the plan is projected to be completed by November 8th. There are currently ten Penske Racing employees already settled in the Mooresville area, another 12 will be relocated by October 16th and the remaining 17 will report to work in North Carolina on November 8th.
Team Manager Tom Wurtz and Team General Manager Clive Howell have been hard at work the past several months coordinating the entire moving process. Not only have the pair worked with each individual employee to determine when they will need to begin calling North Carolina home, but they’ve also assisted with each Team member’s relocation and moving needs. Furthermore, Wurtz and Howell are charge overseeing the transfer of all of the Team equipment.
“We worked with each individual moving to Mooresville, which made this whole project quite a challenge from a logistical standpoint,” explains Wurtz. “For each employee, we created a realistic timeframe for them to make the move that not only suited them from a work perspective, but also from a personal standpoint. Some folks wanted to move down early enough to have their children start the new school year in North Carolina, while others had difficulty selling their property in Pennsylvania. We tried to insure each person’s individual needs were met while continuing to keep the Team operating at full capacity.”
