Newey and Franchitti Crash Heavily at Goodwood
Quote selected text Published September 4th, 2006 in MainRed Bull Racing chief designer Adrian Newey was involved in his second high-speed crash in vintage racing this year.
At the Goodwood Revival Meeting in England, Newey’s Jaguar E-Type lightweight hit the barriers with the right-rear side after the designer got touched while lapping slower traffic in a practice session. The 47-year-old had to be held overnight at a nearby hospital for observation.
Less than two months ago, Newey suffered a similarly significant accident, while driving his Ford GT40 at the Le Mans Classic in July.
“I have no recollection of the event but I am told that we ended up with three cars abreast while lapping a backmarker,” Newey told autosport.com. “I was on the outside and ended up being pushed out onto the grass. The damage to the car is quite light but I must have hit my head on the rollbar, which knocked me unconscious.
“I came round in the ambulance feeling a bit dazed and now I feel as though I have severe jet lag.”
Newey shared his hospital time at St. Richards’ Hospital with IndyCar ace Dario Franchitti, who also spent the night being observed for a concussion after crashing a similar E-Type lightweight.
