Highly respected F1 engineer Mike Gascoyne started work at Spyker’s Silverstone factory on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old Briton, now with the grandiose title of Chief Technology Officer, left Toyota early in 2006 and previously worked as Technical Director at the Renault team.
Gascoyne has also worked for Jordan, his new employer’s former F1 guise, and admits that he had ‘other options’ but didn’t want to join another works team.
“No, I think the challenge for me was to come back to my roots. The challenge was to come to a small team, and make it an efficient, close-knit group, and try and build it up,” he said.
Gascoyne suggested that his new position will be more senior than that of Technical Director James Key, whom he worked with at Jordan, but warned that the 2007 car is already designed.
“I’ll take responsibility for all the technical decisions, but part of being a good manager is that you leave your guys free to do their jobs,” he explained.
“I’ll be in every design meeting, and I’ll be making all the key design decisions.”
