FIA slaps Turkey with record $5 million fine
Quote selected text Published September 19th, 2006 in Main(GMM) Turkish GP organisers escaped a special meeting of the World Motor Sport Council on Tuesday with its race intact but a record (US) $5 million fine.
A statement said the organisers were found of wrongdoing ‘on all counts’, after they were charged with breaking FIA statutes, F1 rules and the international sporting code regarding the infamous podium incident.
It is the biggest monetary penalty ever handed down in motor sport, towering over Ferrari’s $1 million fine after Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello swapped places on the Austrian grand prix podium in 2002.
Turkish officials, however, accepted the sanction.
”What was important for us was to keep the races at the Istanbul track going on,” a member of the organisers’ board told the Anatolia news agency.
