FIA Ban Use of ‘Dampers’, used by Ferrari/Renault
Quote selected text Published July 21st, 2006 in MainWith the flex-wing saga now out of the spotlight, F1’s governing body has turned its attention to banning a different innovation. Teams including title contenders Renault and Ferrari had developed pioneering ‘mass damper’ systems, fitted to the front of the cars, which equalised the effects of tyre bouncing in the corners.
Renault reportedly initiated the systems’ use in Formula One, but it was since picked up by rivals including Red Bull. The FIA has had its eye on the technology for some time and now says it falls foul of article 3.15, which relates to the use of moveable parts.
