(GMM) The F1 drivers’ representative union, GPDA, has backed away from an earlier threat to boycott future Italian grands prix.

But, as promised, the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association issued a statement on Monday which formalised twenty seven race and test drivers’ concern about lagging safety at Monza.

Signed by directors David Coulthard, Michael Schumacher and Jarno Trulli, the statement highlighted the danger of gravel run-off and outdated kerbs at the circuit near Milan, particularly at the second chicane.

”The calculated impact speed (of an accident there) would be 200kph resulting in a 40G deceleration,” the statement read.

The GPDA directors added that they believe Monza can afford to finance improvements, and criticised the circuit for not sending a representative to a drivers’ meeting last weekend.
