Dan Clarke, 22-year-old British driver, who has crossed the Atlantic to race in the USA-based World Champ Car Series, is eager to improve on his first two race performances this weekend in Monterrey, Mexico. Moving to a more familiar type of track, a permanent road course, Clarke is hoping that he can demonstrate his potential.

The Fundidora Park circuit is built on the site of the first steel mill in Latin America in 1983. The lap, running anti-clockwise, is just over two miles long, with the low grip track having an open and wide lay-out. Overtaking should be possible into quite a few of its 12 high and low speed corners. It will be Clarke’s visit to the Mexican track and he is looking forward to moving from the street circuit environment to road course territory.

In the first two races of the Champ Car World Series Clarke has learnt the ropes of street circuit racing and has shown that he can be on the pace quickly at a new venue. In the first race at Long Beach Grand Prix he finished in 11th place, but retired from the Houston event with accident damage.

Clarks says, “I’ve learnt many lessons in the first two events, but have also made a few too many rookie errors, which have hurt my results, particularly at Houston. I have to compliment the team for all the hard work they put in to repairing my car during the weekend, they were fantastic. The problems were of my own making, but they really rallied round and tirelessly made sure I could compete.

“My aim for this weekend is to keep the car on the track every session, giving myself as much practice time as possible, and the best chance for a strong qualifying performance. For the race I need to be patient and precise, and make sure I get to the chequered flag with as many points as possible in the bag.

“The steep learning curve continues in Monterrey, with another new track and new experience for me. My goal is to be hot, but not too spicy, I’ll leave that for the Mexican salsa!”

The third round of the Champ Car World Series in Monterrey starts on Friday morning with first practice and preliminary qualifying, followed by final practice and qualifying on Saturday and the Tecate Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.
