Petty considers swapping points-UPDATE

Bobby LabonteUPDATE:

Petty Enterprises officials say they will not ask NASCAR to approve a points swap between drivers Bobby Labonte and Kyle Petty. That means that Petty will need to qualify based on speed for the March 30 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

The team could have swapped points between the drivers, helping get both into the field. Petty is outside the top 35 in owners points this season, with the locked-in field being set based on this season’s points starting with the Goody’s Orange Cool 500. Since Labonte is the 2000 Cup series champion, he would have been eligible for the past champions provisional as the most recent past champion outside the top 35.

Petty Enterprises is considering swapping points between its drivers Kyle Petty and Bobby Labonte.

Driver Kyle Petty is currently 81 points outside of the top 35, which switches from 2007 points to 2008 points after yesterday’s race.

Should he remain outside the top 35, Executive Vice President of Racing Operations Robbie Loomis said the organization would consider swapping Petty’s points with that of Bobby Labonte – who could be guaranteed a starting spot based on a past champions’ provisional.

“Realistically, we’ll see how we come out of here at the end of today,” Loomis said on Sunday. “I was just talking to Kyle about it, and ultimately it’ll be up to Kyle and Richard [Petty].”

Exactly! Kyle’s a nice guy and all, but he’s way past done. I can understand why he keeps going, but jeez he’s not even close to competitive. Then again if they do it, they’re playing completely within the rules, so it will be up to NASCAR to change the rule if they don’t want garbage like this happening.

They were saying someone else was considering doing a points swap… Forget if it was Penske or maybe Roush, but it seems like it was one of those two. Either way, swapping points mid-season should pretty much only be allowed if one of your teams packs it in for the year and you wanted to transfer those points to a lower ranked driver or something like that.

I would be mad if I was bobby hes only like 90pts from 12th in standings,it may not last maybe not make chase anyway but if swap points that would kill any chance of making it.

This is a loop hole in the rules that needs to be closed. Not only is it unfair it takes a spot away from someone trying to make the race. Bobby will be OK because he has past champion provissionals to keep him in the race.
At some point Kyle must get outa the car. He is very aware of that…

Agreed. HE should have a say in this more than anyone.
He’s performing quite decent and it wouldn’t be fair to
him to place him back outside the top 35. What’s the
point of racing if you can’t even keep the points you
earned? Kyle needs to man up and race his way in.

he fricken finished 3RD in the coke 600…and you guys saying oOo hes in 12 ans the points…there not going to do it if he isnt going to make it, they’ll do it like how penske did it where they know there driver is going to get it, which i really think he would, and the person talking about the chase if they both make it and if kyle doesnt do that great it isnt gunna effect bobbys points they go off owner points not drivers 2 totally diff things

Being a Petty fan, I’m kinda unsure about this. On one hand, It’ll guarantee Kyle(and however drives in his place during the TNT thing) a starting spot and Bobby has proven he can make it in on speed. But on the other, it would be unfair to Bobby because he has earned all those points as all of you know, and since Bobby’s 2009 ride is still unclear, the Petty’s will want to do whatever to keep him (and sponsors) happy and wanting to be back next season

just another reason why bobby needs to go over to a winning program like RCR in 2009. Bobby for the love of god i would love to see you in victory lane again, and thats not going to happen at Petty Enterprises. If Kyle cant get in on speed, then he doesnt need to be racing, and kyle needs to hang it up and put someone in the 45 who can.

NOBODY (not even jeff gordon) will do well in the #45 until that team gets decent equipment.

i have been a petty fan since i was a lil kid! and i don’t care who you are if you have a major problem with your car every race you would be in last place sorry that is just the facts. So that part is not kyle’s fault.

Nascar opened this can of worms up when they let Penske do it , its a mess they need to undo. It should only be allowed if an owner swaps numbers , (like Yates did 88 to 28 ) or if a driver swaps teams. They could fix this by changing the 35 car automatically in the field rule and make everyone not in the top 20 have to qualify. That would make maybe 30 cars fight it out for 23 positions. Much more fair than what they are doing now.

WOW that sucks. And the funny thing is I was at a ‘dega race several years ago, and was listening to the in car radio of Kyle’s and I will never ever forget him saying, and I quote ” If slow ass Dave Marcus would get out of my way, I could get to the front pack”……………….roflmfao. He couldn’t pass me on the interstate.

Maybe you worded it wrong, or maybe I’m just reading it wrong, or maybe you are thinking of the wrong points.. l0l

If Kyle an Bobby swap points it will be OWNER points not Driver points. Bobby will still be in the top 15 of Drivers points, just not owners points.

As a Petty fan like the Guest, I am kinda on the fence about this. What I want to know is, is this just Robbie’s idea, or Did Bobby go to Robbie and suggest this or what. Remember we don’t know all the facts.

Make them swap cars too. Don’t just hand them the points. Put Kyle in the 43 and let him really embarrass that family legacy (if he hasn’t already).

  15. 15 jr88fan

Well first off… Kyle sucks and only has a ride because of his Daddy. And no one can say that he has done ANYTHING in the sport to prove himself. The only thing he is good for is the charity work he does.

Second, That is absolute bull to be swapping points 5, working on 6 races in. That’s like saying a team has 2 drivers running 1 and 2 in the chase, and it looks like 1 is going to get the championship with no one else close enough. But the car owner wants his other driver to to have it, so he says “were swapping”. NO WAY! You cannot just up and swap points around whenever you feel like. This is affecting a driver that IS doing well and one who isn’t and won’t. What crap.

  16. 16 br

Being a Bobby fan I don’t want him to switch with Kyle. Kyle needs to go. Look at Bobby 18 in points, a real shot at making the chase and they’re worried about kyle make a race. Who cares. Leave Bobby where he belongs.

  17. 17 Trey

I would absolutely love to see Bobby at RCR. I guarantee you he’d pick up some more wins before is retirement.

Bobby is over the hill just like Kyle and Kenny and Bill

I disagree with that put bobby in better cars he could still win an compete,I wouldnt hardly compare him to schrader hes been a joke in cup whole career.

JR. person what the hell are you saying that for… look at jr if his name wasnt what it is and if his daddy wasnt who it was he’d be racing in the trucks.

and why all of a sudden are people trying to go after petty i mean ppl never went after M.W. and how many years did it take for him to win a race.

There’s a HUGE difference, that’s why. Jr has proven he has talent and ability to get the job done. Jr would NOT just be in a truck because of his dad. Fact IS Jr has shown he has what it takes to be where he is, championship yet or not. Same can be said of some other drivers with the same name as others. Wallace’s, Waltrip’s, Busch’s, etc. At least we have seen some great racing, finishes, and championship’s that prove that they should be where they are.

Kyle Petty has NEVER done anything to prove himself worthy of being in that ride, hell he’s not even worthy of being in a truck. Oh what he one one race recently ONLY because the rest of the field was wrecked out and it took how many years before then? And, how many top 5’s has he had lately or even the past couple of years… LMAO And we’ll go further and ask.. how many top 10’s? Has even even had a consistentcy of those at least? NOOOOO! And why…. BECAUSE HE SUCKS! Always has always will. He’s just a filler. Plain and simple.

Off of the thread on “does winning win fans over”….(psoted 3-21-08)

QUOTE: “”In a nationwide online survey of 300 avid fans, Dale Earnhardt Jr. ranked first, followed by Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton. But two drivers known more for their boardroom savvy than their racing success rounded out the top five: Michael Waltrip, who has four victories (all between 2001-03) in 694 starts, and Kyle Petty, who has eight wins but none since 1995.”"

NOW LOOK AT PEETY’S “WINNING” STATS/ BAHAHAHA PROVES EXACTLY WHY HE SHOULDN’T BE THERE ANYMORE. SUMMED UP: NON-PRODUCTION.
