Cup in NYSpeedway Motorsports Inc. chairman Bruton Smith believes chances are good NASCAR will move the Cup postseason awards banquet from New York City to Las Vegas in 2008.

“I think it’s 80 to 90 percent likely to happen,” Smith said Tuesday from his office in Charlotte. “I think it would be a wonderful thing for everyone involved if we can get this worked out.”

Ramsey Poston, NASCAR’s managing director of corporate communications, said talk of moving the banquet is strictly speculation.

“NASCAR has no current plans to relocate the banquet,” Poston said. “However, NASCAR is courted on a regular basis by other major cities, and on a consistent basis for the Cup banquet and other banquets.”

Smith said he recently has engaged in some favorable conversations with NASCAR chairman Brian France about the possibility of moving the awards banquet to Las Vegas.

“I think everyone is more accepting of the idea now,” Smith said. “It seems we’ve worn out our welcome a little bit in New York. That was obvious when plans to build a track up there fell through.”

I’ve never understood why in the world they have the banquet in NYC in the first place. They don’t race in NYC, they’re not headquartered there, no teams are based there, etc… Aside from them being greedy and wanting MORE money, there’s not really a reason.

Maybe if they have it in Vegas, Kyle Busch could pull a Pacman Jones and punch a stripper in the face or something! Maybe they’ll eventually move it to Charlotte once the museum and all that is built? Is there going to be a banquet room in the museum?

i think it would be cool to see it move to a new city each year so differnt people could injoy it also.

Las Vegas is one place that really knows how to host a convention and a banquet so lets combine them into a long weekend for all the fans to go see.
A NASCAR convention with ALL the Drivers, Cars and Sponsors in Displays inside and out of the convention center and a final day banquet for the drivers. Let have a party (on nascar of course)

    What do you think ???

how about little rock, ark? This is a southern sport, why not keep it that way?

Why would anyone go to Little Rock ?
No disrespect meant to the great state of Ark. but its not a Daytona Bch., Charlotte, or Las Vegas all places NASCAR has Races and a solid racing base with other attractions to draw people to visit.

Can I make reservations in Vegas now?

    That would be cool!
I live near Vegas so it would be cool to have it close.
And Uncle Clem, Nascar is no longer a southern (only) sport.
    And thank God.

That would be amazing as I live in Vegas…

This city is becoming the hot spot, hell even MTV had the VMA’s here the past weekend instead of LA, NYC, or Miami like they usually do. And then the FIBA championships were just here, and the NBA All-Star game was here this year…Oh and the UAW Daimler Chysler 400 sold out this year, just like normal.

I believe they should have a different location every year like hot rod todd said. I live in Chicago & can’t really get to NYC or Vegas that easily but I’d love to see it all.

Although I never did understand why it was in NY I liked the fact that I could take a day off from work and go check out the cars myabe a driver or 2 not at a race track. Why does it seem like NASCAR has it out for the Northeast? I know nothing is ever official until the deal is done and this is all hearsay but it’s still frustrating. I have to admit I do like the idea of it being someplace new every year so everyone has the opportunity to check it out.. The fact that New York doesn’t have a track or any city for that matter should have nothing to do with where it goes either. maybe even go to cities/states that don’t have tracks so that the people who can’t afford to pay hundred of dollars to get to a race can still have the opportunity to check the cars and maybe the drivers out.
