World Speed Record set in Dodge Charger

Russ Wicks, who holds World Speed Records of more than 200 miles per hour on both land and water, has set a stock car world record of 244.9 miles per hour, which has been confirmed by Guinness World Records.
Wick successfully achieved the record on Tuesday, October 9 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Northwestern Utah while driving a 2007 Dodge Charger built to NASCAR specifications.
The new mark shatters Wicks´ previous stock car world speed record of 222 miles per hour. Wicks´ vehicle was developed with the backing of the Dodge Motorsports Engineering Group and Arrington Engines.

How lame. Why on earth is the stock car speed record set in the Salt Flats with a million miles of flat space? So you can take a stock car (with no restrictor plate, I’m assuming) and drive it in a seemingly infinite straight line until it pegs out the motor. Whoopeee! I’m not impressed one little bit.

I remember back in the 80’s when Chevy did an unofficial test at Talladega (I think it was ‘dega) with Tim Richmond and he topped 250 unofficially. Anyone else remember this?

I do remember this test, it was held in Ohio at what is now the Honda test track. I agree, this record is lame if its not on a track of some sort.
My buddy set a record at the salt flats in Infiniti Gcoupe with a Indy engine!
World Speed Records have been set at Bonneville for years. For Land Speed Record fans, Bonneville is there Daytona. They run all types of cars, motorcycles, etc there. It’s about testing the limits of machine and seeing what you can make it do. You souldn’t bash it just because you don’t understand it. Hopefully things learned about aerodynamics during these runs can eventually make it over to the Cup level.
Talk about lame! They keep showing a picture of an Avenger, not a Charger!

To add to some of these comments , Rusty Wallace said he was terrified running that fast in that unrestricted car at Talladega and said there is no way you could run a whole race with 43 cars going that fast and not kill about half the field. Maybe thats why this guy ran at Bonneville , he wasnt interested in finding out what crashing into a wall at 240 mph was like.
was it in a car of today or a car of tomorrow? Anyone know? It says chanrger, i assume of today? I’d like to see them run a COY and COT side by side down bonneville and compare the speed numbers from the boxier design.
