Gene Nead, crew chief for the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup car, has left the team, team officials confirmed Monday morning.

Nead joined the Wood Brothers in November 2007 after a stint with Robby Gordon Motorsports. With a variety of drivers this year – Bill Elliott, Johnny Sauter and Jeff Green – the Wood Brothers have failed to qualify for four of the five events.

The team is 44th in owners points and has had to qualify for races on speed but should be OK for the race in Martinsville because with Dale Jarrett’s retirement and Kurt Busch now being locked in with points, Elliott is expected to be the only past champion who isn’t locked into the field.

The team has not yet named a replacement for Nead.

what is wrong with the woods?. they had a great driver in ken. why couldn’t they keep him in the seat. ken made the 21 car rock. all them other drivers of the 21 car are not any where near the hot rod drive ken is. good luck to the woods.

The Woods have been part of NASCAR since the earliest days, and its hard not to wish for their success, but the challenge is getting greater and greater for them every year. Underfunded for years, they are further handicapped by bad decisionmaking when it comes to who sits in the 21. ThThe way they have treated Schrader is shameful. The wisdom of the idea putting Green behind the wheel, only to have qualifying rained out was just plain stupid. And Jon Wood’s inability to commit to a driving career, at the expense of other drivers and crew members, i sridiculous. I imagine that Nead finally had enough of this nonsense. If the Woods don’t get their act together really soon, their days in NASCAR are numbered.

Nead should reunite with a clown like Spencer because that’s where he belongs. This guy is a know-it-all ingrate and I’m sure Robby is happy now.
