Will NASCAR mergers squash the smaller teams?
Quote selected text Published August 8th, 2007 in NASCAR News
One thing we keep hearing about NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow is that it is supposed to make racing more affordable. Virtually no modifications are allowed, so teams shouldn’t need huge fleets of track-specific cars. They shouldn’t have to spend exorbitantly on engineering and technology. Smaller or new teams ought to be able to compete on equal footing with the established powerhouses.
Well, apparently not.
If this year’s trend toward partnerships and mergers has made one thing clear, it’s that team owners still believe races and championships will be won by the teams with the most resources.
And where do these partnerships and mergers leave smaller teams, such as Petty Enterprises and Wood Brothers/JTG Racing, or newer teams such as Hall of Fame Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing?
Well, even farther behind.
“Every team is going to do what they can to be competitive,” defending Nextel Cup champion Jimmie Johnson said. “There is no doubt that having the fourth car out there is a benefit and is helpful. You bring in more capital, you have more resources, more people, another car on track for notes and experience and all those types of things.”

Yes mergers will squash the smaller teams
If Nascar is not careful it will start loosing the smaller teams and at some point might not have enough “good” cars to fill the field. Just like it was a few years back, you’ll have teams come and get in the race couse there are only 43 (or less) cars showing up, then they will start the race, run a few laps and quit so they can run the same equipment the next week. they then get last place money and points with a minimal expence
Nascar is getting TOOOOOO big and something has to give.
This is nothing new.
Oh nothing new but it’s hard to see small teams get pinched out or forced to sell out to big $$ people. The new NASCAR mantra is “Grow or Go”.
This is just a continuation of something old. The small teams were pinched out long ago. It might be sad on some level but the racing now is more competitive in almost every aspect, whether you discount the conspiracies or not.
“Grow or Go” is also a dictate of capitalism.
