A Washington lawmaker who erroneously called Richard Petty a drunk driver has apologized to the seven-time NASCAR champion.
Petty, who is helping NASCAR with its efforts to build a track in Washington state, was surprised when House Speaker Frank Chopp began apologizing for referring to Petty as “that guy who got picked up for a DUI.”
“I didn’t know what he was apologizing for, because I hadn’t read the paper,” Petty said. Saturday while at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. “When I walked out the door, I said, ‘What’s he apologizing for?’ Then they started going through all that, the different stuff he said.
“I said, ‘I’m glad you didn’t tell me what he really said, because I might have went off on him if I had known what he really said.’ ”
Petty has never been convicted of drunk driving, and Petty Enterprises has never associated with beer or other alcohol-related sponsors. The team does not compete in the Busch Series because of its opposition to alcohol.

wow. Washington has some real geniuses they’ve elected up there.
Great another lawmaker shooting his mouth off without thinking first and making Washington State look like a bunch of idiots. Well thanks M. Lawmaker, but when it comes to voting on, I am for the track here in Washington.
Hell, If Washington or Denver doesn’t want a track…There is a lot of open land here in Eastern Ohio….couple hours from Cleveland and Columbus, with Pittsburgh International Airport 45mins away. We’d LOVE to have the track. I’m told that 2/3 of the US population is within 8 hours drive.
this just in Junior Johnson supposedly arrested dealing crack in Seattle…its obvious washington thinks that all us north carolinians and nascar fans sit around on our tobbaco farms scratching our butts and flying rebel flags and punching out gordon fans…yeee haw…
So let me get this straight: two Democrats, the party of tolerance, called NASCAR fans essentially white trash and accused the king of the sport of being a drunk.
Nice.
Dam
