Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire says International Speedway Corp. doesn’t have the political support necessary to put a track in Kitsap County and it needs to look at an alternate site in Washington.
ISC has submitted a bill in both houses of the state Legislature that would create a funding plan for a race track anywhere in Washington, but the company is focused on the Kitsap site for a 1.2-mile track located about 20 miles south of Seattle.
There are no Kitsap legislators signed on as sponsors of the funding package. At a meeting Friday with Kitsap legislators, there was not much support for the track in that area.
“They were a resounding no,” Gregoire said in a news conference Monday. “They don’t object to NASCAR; they don’t want it in its location in Kitsap County.”
Gregoire suggested to ISC that it look in Lewis County, which is 80-90 miles south of Seattle and 80-90 miles north of Portland, Ore.
Lewis County has a closed mine that it would like to donate for the track.
