Michael Waltrip Racing officials were pulling out a backup car Wednesday morning as NASCAR officials began inspecting the team’s No. 55 that was impounded following Sunday’s Daytona 500 qualifying session.
The team’s No. 00 backup car of David Reutimann was being prepared for Waltrip to use in tomorrow’s qualifying races. Waltrip’s intake manifold was confiscated by NASCAR officials prior to qualifying at Daytona International Speedway Sunday after it was found to have a foreign substance in it.
“Right now they’re letting us pull out a backup car and we’re going to present it to go get ready for tomorrow,” MWR general manager Ty Norris said Wednesday morning. “That’s all I know.”
Officials are expected to make a decision concerning Waltrip’s status for the rest of the Daytona 500 events prior to today’s first Nextel Cup practice, which is scheduled for noon EST.
