Vickers doesn’t think Bruton Smith’s extra security offer is serious

Brian Vickers said thanks but no thanks to Lowe’s Motor Speedway’s offer to provide him extra security this weekend at the track.
Vickers won last weekend’s race at Talladega, Ala., after hitting Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson on the last lap. Johnson collected then-leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the accident as well.
“We appreciate the offer. We passed on that,” Vickers said Thursday. “I feel like if they were really concerned, they would have called me personally.
“I haven’t gotten a call or anything and neither has Hendrick Motorsports. If I would have done it, I would have handled it another way besides putting out a press release.”
As for the last-lap incident with Johnson and Earnhardt Jr., Vickers said it left him with a bittersweet feeling following his first Cup victory.
The team “hasn’t really been able to celebrate it like they should be able to,” he said. “And it’s unfortunate. I made a mistake. It wasn’t intentional. It is what it is.
“There is nothing we can do about it. After seeing some of the comments, I’ve really been impressed with (Dale Earnhardt Jr.). I gained a lot of respect for him and how he’s handled everything.”
