Unlike NASCAR, cheaters get slammed in F1

As witnessed by the severity of the $100 million fine and loss of all points for two years handed down by the FIA World Council against the McLaren F1 team Thursday for cheating, the FIA means business. NASCAR fines for cheating pale in comparison, hence why cheating continues to be a weekly occurrence in NASCAR.
[Editor's Note: Surely the FIA's $100 million fine levied against McLaren yesterday is huge. Do you agree that NASCAR's fines are merely continual slaps on the wrist with no real deterrent to the offenders...hence why the cheating continues? Discuss!]

Because F1 sucks and they all cheat and lie and steal!
I dont see gibbs stealing 700+ pages of every bit of hendrick motorsports technical data either, in nascar its not cheating its “finding an advantage” and it is part of the sport and a good thing…

There is a big diff between lowering your car a little more, or have the spolier in the wrong spot by the smallest margin, and having pages and pages and video of your openants whole program.
I disagree wholeheartedly with all of you, the reason why it’s not the same is because nascar mandates the shape of the cars, so changing your car in Nascar to get an advantage is the same as MCLaren getting Ferrari notes. The Chad Knaus deal at Infineion, show how team don’t care for the rules. In both situations they both tried to get an unfair advantage over the rest of the field
Nascar should start make fines in the millions to stop the pushing of there buttons.
That is ri-frickin’-diculous right there. Who in the world do they think they are fining somebody 100 million dollars? That’s like Cruel and Unusual Punishment right there. Screw F1.
And Paul Cooper…If Knaus and Letarte were trying to hide something, then why did they do something that was visible to the entire garage and officials? Think about it…

I agree with some of what you all are saying, but I think it comes down to money in the end. NASCAR couldn’t really get away with taking some many points for such a length of time. While I don’t care either way, my reason for saying so is because if they were to do so, that teams sponsers would eventually begin to pull out, thus losing money for NASCAR in the long run. NASCAR is trying to remain the “big dog” in motorsports, so they can’t afford to lose sponsers. While this may not be the only reason, I’m quite sure that it’s one of the main reasons. Yes, I think that there shouldn’t be any cheating. I also think that some of the things that are considered cheating in NASCAR is not really cheatly, just mearly trying to gain somee little of an advantage with competition being so tight. And I think that NASCAR sometimes do make up rules on the spot and still fine people/ But as I said, I think that it all comes down to money in the end and NASCAR trying to remain the badest dog in the yard.
100 Million dollars won’t put a car on the track in F1, But you could build and race A dandy stock car with that kind of money. I think Mclarens fine is appropriate for that level of Racing. If you consider the history and tradition of Formula 1, Then I feel that Mclaren has violated A code of Honor that predates our Nascar, And should be held as A benchmark for Auto Racing at all levels.

In nascar, it costs 20 million a year to run the car, and the fines are in the 50,00 bracket. That’s 1/400th of the cost of the car.
an F1 car costs what, 50 or 60 million a year to run? even more? so basicaly they’re saying we’re going to fine you whatever it cost you to run for one year (which they should- that scandal went on all season). So i think that it’s right, even though that is A LOT of money.
you can’t compare F1 and NASCAR budget wise. NASCAR is a heck of a lot cheaper, but more strict.
Like was said, nascar fines you just if you have something wrong when you show up. In NHRA if you do that, they tell you to fix it. NASCAR tells you to fix it and pay them X thousand dollars at the same time. That is absurd in itself.
Also, i agree that sonoma was an effort of using the gray area, not breaking the rules. They were working with an area that a template was not at, and they still got hit for it, even though it was perfectly legal. Same with the shocks at Dover whichever year that was.
NASCAR’s fines are where they should be. Where they are wrong, is at that fine line between creativeness and breaking the rules. Superteams like hendrick can care less if they lose the crew cheif for a few weeks, thats what cellular communication is for. Money means nothing anymore, they make it up later in the year anyways with the point fund. If NASCAR wants to get attention, not that they havent already, keep the points fines around 50 and 100. We saw with JR and the chase that one penalty can really mess you up.

Do you not understand that McLaren were passing messages such as;
“Ferrari are trying this weight distribution in their car, lets try it in the simulator”
and
“Nigel Stephney told us Kimi will be stopping on lap 18″
that is horrible, thats beyond cheating.
McLaren were right to get that big of a fine and excluded from the championship.

Andrew i completely agree with you. McLaren had Ferrari’s what we could call “Bible”. They had all of their brake package efficiencies, aerodynamic developments, race strategies, race setups, everything. And not only did Mike Coughlan get it from Nigel, Pedro and Alonso were talking about it too. Alonso was like dude we need to try Ferrari’s tyre gas they use and stuff. Thats beyond normal and I think called for exclusion 1) Constructors [done], 2) Alonso out of the car, and for the next 2 years.
Hamilton had nothing to do with it and that has been proved. And no, I am not a Hamilton or McLaren fan, i’m just giving facts and my ultimate opinion.
F1 is a sport run by technology
nascar is run with sheet metal and carburators
$100 million is something a F1 team can pay up since they earn millions and millions to race computer run cars
if u scale it to nascar it seems just about right
$100 million penalty in a hi tech sport compared to our $100k penalty and our back-in-the-day engine setup
now as far as points, F1 is in their own little world on that one
It is impossible to compare anything about F1 to Nascar……….a joke.
Some of you are missing the big picture here, what McLaren did is a crime. Stealing documents from a competitor, company, organization, or person, is illegal and punishable by fines and imprisonment.
I don’t condone cheating, but with the clamps that NASCAR has put on ingenuity and creativity, has to be driving the engineers crazy! They’ve put a lock on creativity, the very thing that spawns progress and advancement.
Who is NASCAR to be changing the face of our beloved sport, anyway? They’re there to govern and uphold the rules of the sport. Not change the face of it!
