Martin Truex, JrMartin Truex Jr. earned his first career Nextel Cup pole Friday afternoon, qualifying at 193.106 mph to earn the No. 1 spot for Sunday’s Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

“We have been second a bunch this year, so we’ve been close,” said Truex, who had started on the outside of Row 1 at Chicagoland, New Hampshire and Martinsville. “This is our favorite car.”

Truex made the Chase for the Nextel Cup this year, but after leading a race-high 135 laps before getting in a late-race crash at Atlanta last weekend he has dropped to 12th in the standings.
