The Toyota Camry for the current version car has been approved for 2007, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said Friday.

The engine likely will be approved in the coming weeks, Pemberton said.

“That car is done and has been approved,” Pemberton said. “[Engine-wise], they’ve brought parts and it should be done by the end of this month.”

NASCAR still must take the “car of tomorrow” to the wind tunnel in the next week before making final approvals for all four manufacturers - Toyota, Dodge, Chevy and Ford.

“All the manufacturers and the teams have ordered construction templates and are building cars as we go,” Pemberton said. “The only sign-off that we have left is the identity part of the car, which is the grille and the headlight area and the hood. But anybody could build cars right now.”

Bill Davis Racing Competition Director Tommy Baldwin said his team plans to test a current Camry and a “car of tomorrow” Camry at the Homestead test session Oct. 16-17. He then plans on having new driver Jeremy Mayfield testing the cars weekly until February.
