Stewart wins his 2nd Brickyard 400 at Indy
Quote selected text Published July 29th, 2007 in NASCAR News
Tony Stewart passed Kevin Harvick with nine laps remaining and pulled away to win the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on July 29 at his beloved home track, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Stewart beat runner-up 2000 Indianapolis 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya by 2.982 seconds and averaged 117.379 mph for his second victory in this marquee NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series event in the last three years.
Stewart also won in 2005.
Four-time Allstate 400 at the Brickyard champion Jeff Gordon placed third. Kyle Busch and pole sitter Reed Sorenson finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
“This one I’m going to remember a lot more of it, for sure, afterward,” Stewart said. “But no, it is still like a dream. The first one was great, but there was so much going around it, being the first one. Both races were special. Neither of the wins outweighs the other win.”
Stewart, from nearby Columbus, Ind., finished an intense duel with 2003 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard winner Harvick on Lap 151. Harvick passed Stewart for the lead in Turn 1 on a restart on Lap 141. Stewart stalked Harvick for the next 10 laps, finally passing him in the short chute between Turns 1 and 2 on Lap 151.
Harvick pulled alongside Stewart in Turn 3 on that lap, with their Chevrolets touching. But Stewart pulled away on the main straightaway in his Home Depot Chevrolet and never trailed thereafter. Harvick faded to seventh.
Stewart earned $488,111 for the victory. He led seven times for 65 laps.
Montoya made history immediately after “Desperate Housewives” actor James Denton waved the green flag to start the race, as he became the first driver in IMS history to compete in three major events at the track. In 2000, he won in his only Indianapolis 500 start. He started in six Formula One United States Grands Prix and his first Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on Sunday.
He ran among the leaders during the entire event and passed Harvick for second on Lap 157 of the 160-lap race.
“At the start, I was just happy to run in the top five,” Montoya said. “That was the idea, stay in the top five, try to make the car better every stop. And we kept working on it.”
Seven of the nine caution periods in the race occurred in the first half of the 160-lap event, with six triggered by accidents on the 2.5-mile oval.
One of the drivers eliminated in an accident on Lap 62 was 2006 Allstate 400 at the Brickyard winner Jimmie Johnson. It was his second accident of the day, as he was involved in an eight-car wreck on Lap 46 triggered by a collision between he and Jamie McMurray.
After repeated pit stops for repairs, Johnson’s Lowe’s Chevrolet careened into the SAFER Barrier in Turn 3, with flames trailing from the rear. Johnson scurried from the car and was unhurt.
While Indiana native Stewart and former Indiana resident Gordon finished first and third, other Hoosier racers didn’t fare as well.
South Bend’s David Stremme and Ryan Newman finished 26th and 42nd, respectively. Newman’s day ended after a Lap 21 accident. Tony Raines, from LaPorte, finished 41st after a Lap 40 incident that also involved Kasey Kahne and IMS veteran Robby Gordon.

Woohoo! Go Tony! He really had the best car today without a doubt. All season long I’ve been banking on his typical second half surge, and I guess it’s here
Nice to see JPM have a good run today as well and really race pretty clean. That will go a long way to people trusting him and racing with him.
Tony said bulls___. Another fine.
this is for all the fans up in the stands cheering for me every week and take all the bull s___
hahahaha get ready for heavy fines!!
Yeah, going to be interesting to see what they do to him about that… I forget what Jr got whacked for when he said “that ain’t s___” in victory lane… I think it was 25pts, maybe? Wondering if this will be different since it was on Cable and Jr’s was on NBC?
Bitch Boy wins another 1. What a CHODE!! Well it get fined for saying BULL____! Hahahaha!! Dunb ass!!
well looks like another rigged race for the nascrap league. way to rig a race for ur former crapwagon driver tony stewart. the indy motor speedway belongs to Champ Car only so just retire and hide ur idiot self Tony George u moron.
lol well said beth. FTG needs to just retire and hide himself for good. he riggs races for the NASCRAP league & his stupid EARL league.
Nascarfan4life24: TONY WINS, in you face. And by the way you spell it “Dumb Ass” of course a 24 fan is forgiven for not knowing how to spell It,
I guess but dude’ use spell check and stop embarrassing your self…
Tony deserved to win this one no matter what you whiners think he was the best today, AGAIN
ahahaha he said bull**** i know wats coming well im a jeff fan and i say congrats to tony, he has the momentum, all i have to say is that i hate the chase
it was funny when he said “here kitty kitty”. it also sounded gay
the only thing that pissed me off about this race for my boy Harvick was the crew not fixin the damn car right at all,,
yea the bump may have added to it just a little bit but no way should it have caused him to fall to 7th, thats
horseshit but congrats to Stewart, I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t get fined because Jr said hell no after the
Chicago race and nothin happened. And on Stewart’s bullshit, OMG a curse word on tv, like we can’t change the channel and hear it an
Wow, people are so intrigued by him that they can’t even let him
have a win in peace. D’you notice the rest of the articles on the
driver who won the race every week never get this many comments period,
let alone in the first hour? He gives you something to whine about,
be thankful.
I applaud him, and any driver, for cussing, honestly. I mean not if
they go out of their way to do it, but if it just slips out and they
don’t care, kudos. I don’t give a d__n about Nascar being a family
sport; if you have little kids and you don’t want them to hear it,
mute the tv. It’s not like the commentators are going to say anything
interesting anyway. And the tv stations are supposed to have sensoring
devices so the drivers don’t have to worry about it. I’m personally
glad to see those little specks of personality shine through
occasionally. Hell with Tony I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s doing it
on purpose to goad Nascar and prove a point about how they’re not
going to take his personality away; it’s not like they’ll fine him
enough to take a drop out of the bucket for it anyway, why not have
a little fun with it.
Congratulations to Tony for a well-deserved victory.
By the way, Junior runs well and has mechanical trouble again.
Hm, point made.
Haha another 25 point penalty will be comin’ Smokes way…maybe he should think before he talks! lol Go JPM! Great run…
Two wins in a row. Watch out Tony is hitting his stride now. Keep the hate coming, obviously its working. Congrats Tony keep it up.
Smoke is the man! Remember what the stats are for for Brickyard winners going on to win the cup! Can we say… “Tony wins the Cup in 07?” I think most of you better check yourselves!
#1 Smoke fan!
Stop with the damn hating…stop being so jealous. He won! Get OVER IT! HE’S A BETTER DRIVER THAN MOST OF THE ONES OUT THERE RIGHT NOW!!
Good job Tony !!! AWESOME WIN!!!
I’m celebrating right now !
WOOO!!
1)I’m a Gordon fan, great run by Gordon to increase the points lead.
2)Hate Stewart but congrats to him.
3)He didn’t have to be so cocky that he won and the “here kitty, kitty” part… But I do admit it was pretty funny
4)I think cussing should be aloud in NASCAR. Brings us back to our southern roots.
5)Who was the one that decided that there are “bad words”. Thier jsut words like every other one in the worlds.
6) Feel bad for Jr., had a great run going.
Hey, does anybody know what NASCAR talked to Harvick about after the donut he put on Tony after the race?
Oh yeah that’s the other thing haha “Here Kitty Kitty” was great. =]
Shows he and Harvick really are friends but competitors lol.
From the post race interview with Harvick on the radio it seemed like Harvick was mad. Anyone fill me in?
They eventually caught up with Harvick, and he said he didn’t appreciate Stewart
damaging his quarter panel and thus the damage caused him
to fall back to seventh in the end.
So he was upset. He even said something along the lines of he would have
wrecked Stewart if he had known he was going to dent his quarter panel?
Something like that.. pretty interesting.
Anyways, Tony Stewart, I hate you. But congradulations none the less.
GO DALE JR!! Almost buddy!
nascar can you explain why dale jr was in the middle of pit road stalled and you could not close the pits until he gets out of the way have you noticed how hard it is too get on and off pit road anyway without him in the way surely all the officials could have noticed the pits had a stall. at the entrance or exit they would close for a lap good no one lost the race because of it
congrats smoke!!! you earned it don’t care whatcha doin’off track but man you are excellent on track! there are times i know there’s things you’d like to say but are too smart to go for it! and if you all think richard petty didn’t mix it up and swear you should have been trackside martinsville and at richmond these guys are human things. those guys could swing as quick if not quicker than most of today’s driver can swear. THAT my friends make nascar the real am sport
Stewart is not going to win this years championship! Keep dreaming buddy! The 2007 cup champ will be Mr. Jeff Gordon!!!! Heres to #5!!!
champ car = laughable. beth, you’re a funny girl and so is the bitterness the two of you have.
the track was tony’s. i called it before it started. if y’all remember ‘05 and how hard he raced againt kahne, it was ridiculous. kahne’s car was better but when tony’s behind the wheel and he wants it, he gets it. tony is by no means personable and quite frankly i can’t stand to hear him speak but he’s good. freakin’ good.
nascar can you explain why dale jr was in the middle of pit rad stalled and the pits did not close have you noticed how hard it is to get on and off pit road without a stalled car in the way surely all the pit official could see him sitting there good thing no one lost the race because of it
sorry andy somehow my comment about pits ended up with your name on it i did not realize when i hit leave comment it said andy until i posted it and i dont know how to change it so i just rewrote it
It was a good race to the end, Tony did a great job. Jr had some tough luck…But Gordon increased his points lead, which i loved to see. Jeff will for sure be #1 when the chase comes around,i hope he can bring home #5!!
JR over-revved his motor and blew his engine….and sitting on pit road…hahahahahahahahaha

Stewart is not going to win this years championship! Keep dreaming
buddy! The 2007 cup champ will be Mr. Jeff Gordon!!!! Heres to #5!!!
You are both among the most immature, close-minded, predictable people
I have ever seen. We get it. You dislike your respect charges. We also
don’t care to hear it on every f___ing board that has anything to do
with either one of them. No one knows who’s going to win the championship
this year until we get to the crowning of the champion come season’s
end, and no one knows for sure why Jr’s engine blew unless you’d like
to attemp to convince me you’re a part of his engine that has somehow
possessed a human body. Give it a break already.
So what did everyone think of “Draft Track”? I thought it was pretty lame, but at least they didn’t beat us to death with it every 5 minutes. I don’t see it sticking around very long. Didn’t seem like it gave all that much info for the few times they used it… Maybe if I had never watched a race before and maybe if I hadn’t taken an Aerodynamics class in college, I would have thought it might be beneficial, but I really didn’t see the point. Everyone knows that clean air is better. We don’t need a fancy computer-generated airflow thingy to show us that!
Jeff you got that right, that thing was a waste of time and money, the tracker they used in the busch series
earlier int he year to show horsepower gain and increased downforce when in the draft was better, but that
wasn’t even that great. The new ESPN garage and new animations are pretty cool though, and I like how
they say “if you want to know more go to espn.com” instead of Fox always acting like every viewer is brand new
every damn week.
You can say what you want about “Smoke” but the race was his today and he proved it. He had a good car and he took the win.
Congratulations Tony on another well deserved win!!!
thiers times when i cant stand tony but today he reearned my respect FOR NOW! I HATE THE CHASE FORMAT! GO JEFF # 24
Haha Jeff I agree, I thought the draft track was the stupidest
add yet. When they first did it, I thought, oh damn they’re
going to do this every lap watch. But thank goodness they didn’t.
My mom thought the car was on fire LMAO.
***SORRY POSTED UNDER SAL’S NAME***

I would like to know how jr over revved the engine when they dont shift in the corners and besides he was on the staightaway, you must have had a brain fart

LOL teresa, the only thing that is laughable is NASCRAP. NASCRAP is soooooooooo boring.
the way NASCRAP is going right now is burying it self in the ground. and teresa r u a
crapwagon supporter cuzz u must like Tony George a.k.a. FTG. so all of u NASCRAP supporters
if i were u i would get the hell off of the couch and do something constructive around ur
trailer trash mobile home instead of watching those taxi cabs u call NASCAR.
lol i thought the “draft track” was some kinda cheap fire effect… other than that ya that was real dumb and pointless… the animated engine touch screen thing was pretty radical though.
you’re funny, too. you are as ignorant as the nascar fans you make fun of. you must be a hardcore tracy fan or just the usual bitter champ fan. i wouldn’t bat an eye if NASCAR disappeared but you should be cautious in bashing a successful business like NASCAR when your little whiny baby, “oohhhh the Gs are too strong,” drivers wussed out and spelled the demise of CART. CHAMP is just the last ditch try. that series is a large waste of time (and of course money) and i can think of about 5,943,959 other road course series i’d rather watch. when bourdais leaves it’s safe to say all the talent in champs goes as well.
“draft track” was pretty lame. i hope it was a last minute decision and didn’t cost too much money and more importantly i hope it never returns. i find it annoying when every broadcast is catered to viewers like they are NASCAR virgins. how many other sports do that during a game? um, pretty much none. they call the action, make some comments and that’s it. there’s no “a dummie’s guide to ____” for other sports. the only thing i have ever liked from any network is when during an IRL race, abc and espn go “side-by-side” during commercials. NASCAR refused to do it of course when they went with ESPN. surprised? no. either way, it’s the best feature of any sport broadcast.
i wouldn’t be happy if i lost either. poor grumpy gills.
whoops, i meant that for the post about 29. ha!
two open wheel champions first and second=priceless.
JR blowing up the motor=inevitable
kiss the top 12 goodbye=only a matter of time!
“oohhhh the Gs are too strong,” ….is this your explanation for the restrictor plate?
so all of u NASCRAP supporters
if i were u i would get the hell off of the couch and do something
constructive around ur trailer trash mobile home instead of watching t
hose taxi cabs u call NASCAR.
Well, you’re just not the brightest crayon in the box, are you? By
the way, it wouldn’t hurt Champ Car and IRL fans to get off their
duff and do something around the house too, seeing as that’s one of
your pissant arguments against Nascar and it’s fans. And as far as
your insinuation that champ car racing is the rich snob sport vs.
the poor sport of Nascar, I’ve met wealthy people who like Nascar or
both as well as poor people who like Champ Car or both. Class
makes no difference, it’s a personal preference.
two open wheel champions first and second=priceless.
Yes, two open wheel champions who would rather race Nascar. That is
rather priceless.
“i wouldn’t bat an eye if NASCAR disappeared but you should be cautious in bashing a successful business like NASCAR….”
within that statement lies the typical Nascar fan.
“It’s popular, so , I need to be a part of it..”
When I spend my racing dollars, I don’t consider what the best business is. I choose not to support yellow flag racing. Did anyone actually enjoy the first half of yesterday’s race?
8 cautions in under 80 laps…if you are proud of that display of racing might, I say good for you….you are far too sophisticated for me.
if you want to talk about racing skill, look at who finished first and second. Montoya doesn’t even know what he is doing yet.
SMOKE IS ON FIRE!!! And to all the haters, you can kiss it! This is what Tony was
talking about when he said thank you to all of his fans that sit here and take the crap
from everyone else. I also think that it’s kinda silly to sit on the computer and say that
someone else needs to get off their behind and do something around the house. There are 2
problems with this.
First, if you don’t like Nascar then what are you doing on this page!?!?!?!?!
Secondly, if you were not watching the race yourself, how do you know what is going on?
Just a few questions to ponder as I sit in my “trailer” with my beer and my huntin’ dog. (LMAO)
I do agree that Nascar should have the same rules for every driver. I am a # 3 fan until the day
I die but I think that the “old” Nascar died the same day. It has not been the same since. Yes,
I am a Stewart fan now but that don’t mean that I don’t think he should get the same penalties that
everyone else has.
Anonymous-Actually, if she’s the same as me, it’s because all of
popular stock car racing is too over-governed [[Nascar, ARCA, USAR
Hooters Pro Cup, all of it]] but Nascar is the easiest to follow
because it’s the most-televised. By the way, the Brickyard is a
shi__y race no doubt, but it’s more of a sports car track than a
stock car track and you’re the big sports car fan, yes? So yay for
your leagues building a shi__y track that, unfortunately, the
dumba__es who run ours picked up. And d’you notice, the Nascar
drivers who’ve run sports cars still come back to Nascar, and drivers
of all other kinds of racing come to the sport as well. Ricky
Carmichael, for instance. He’s a two-wheel guy and even he wanted
to give stock car racing a go.
Sports cars have never raced at the Brickyard. Open-wheel cars have many times.
(Arguing with you is having an argument with an un-armed person….you don’t know sh*t.)
Ricky Carmichael basically is ready to retire from motorcycle racing, that is a very young mans sport.
Anyone can race Nascar at any age.
Notice, he is too smart to go to open wheel and get his ass kicked.
Or even sports cars….whatever YOU THINK those are.
2 NASCAR DRIVERS from open wheel finish in 1st and 2ond place.
So your point is ???
That they know where the $$$ are (mom raised no fools here)
That they are good drivers (at this level you must be)
Every one came from some form of racing BUT all would prefer to drive
stock cars in NASCAR (and we fans do appreciate it.)
Point is Southern stock car drivers su&k. Won’t be long and no Real Stock Car drivers will be left.
Ok, he said bull____ and should recieve the same heavy fines as
anyone else!
Even when he WINS he finds something negative to say!
…and I like how, to him, it’s ok to bump harvick’s car and cause
damage enough to send him to a 7th place win because they’re friends
and add insult to injury saying “This is my race!”
Thanks Tony!!!!!!! You are a throw back to the GOOD old days of racing.
Your driving ability is amazing. God love you it is so good to hear
someone say what is on thier mind…… I am so SICK of P.C. and those
busy bodies that have nothing better to do that moniter the unwashed
masses.
Yes, I don’t know the proper terminology for those kind of cars because
I don’t waste my time watching them. My bad. Congratulations, hopefully
proving me wrong for the first time has given you a sense of purpose.
Hey everybody, do me a favor and don’t let him turn a millionth board
into a pathetic argument over open-wheel cars [[There, happy? I
corrected myself.]] v. stock cars, it appears to be what he lives for.
It’s okay to bump Harvick’s car because that’s part of racing; I don’t
agree with turning other guys around or mashing them into the wall,
but since when is racing hard wrong? And I highly doubt he was trying
to gode Harvick with any comments he made, he was just celebrating his
win. [[Well, besides "Here Kitty Kitty" obviously, but that's just funny
and if Harvick couldn't laugh at that at the time he needs to get
l-Well, you can guess.]]
There is no argument……..jethro can’t beat anyone but jethro jr.
Hey guys, guess what, ITS MONDAY! Which means stop looking back on the Brickyard and look forward to Pocono, who y’all think is going to win?

LOL ur funny 2 teresa.ur inbred hick comments make me laugh.ur NASCRAP sh_t is boring like
hell. driving around in circles for hours.how much more boring can that get.
and let me tell u this teresa and all of u NASCRAP fans, indy belongs ONLY to open-wheel racing
not those stupid taxi cabs u call stock cars. OPEN-WHEEL RACING WILL RISE AGAIN and NASCRAP
will DIE.besides i do better things then watch that NASCRAP stuff.NASCRAP + Injury Racing League
= DARK SIDE of racing.Champ Car + F1 are the true forms of Racing.
I enjoy all the yellow flags, it gives the network plenty of commercial time.
