Tony StewartTony Stewart, who has spent his entire NASCAR Cup Series career at Joe Gibbs Racing, says he is in no rush to begin talks regarding a contract extension with the successful racing operation.

“Right now I just want to get started with this year,” Stewart said Tuesday. “I’m really not concerned about the end of ‘09 right now because we’ve still got to get through ‘08.

“Obviously, it’s a topic with the team here, and they want to get it taken care of, but right now I want to see how the beginning of this year goes. Get halfway through the season before we even worry about talking about it again.”

If he wins the 500, he won’t sign an extension because he’ll retire from full time Cup racing.

I doubt he will retire at such a young age.

Don’t see him retiring either, and I don’t blame him a bit for wanting to get a feel for this whole Toyota thing before committing long-term!

I think he doesn’t want to sign an extension because he never really wanted to leave Chevy. This may be his opportunity to leave Gibbs and go back to a Chevy team.

There are other teams out there, like RCR or Hendrick who can persuade Tony to drive for them. I think RCR would finally be able to add a 4th successful team is Stewart ever went there.

Tony is a Chevy man. It has to be hard for him this season knowing he will be in a Toyota.

    Check out this scenario:
TS wins in a Gibbs Toyota several times this upcoming season.
TS then drives for HMS a few years from now and wins the title in a Chevrolet. TS then publicly denounces Toyota and all is well in the world of NASCAR.

Jeff Gordon and Jr fans will all hold hands and sing kum bye ah in unison too.

    Haha, that’ll never happen..

Has anybody noticed that Tony seems a bit more..grouchy..since the start of pre-season? Everyone knows how he feels about the Toyotas. Even if he DOES win the 500, he’s still going to contemplate staying with the Toyotas.
Tony’s loyalty lies with JGR; but the question on his mind is, does his career?

iam with you on that one sam! tooo young and way too much money to be made. i think if the toys dont do all that well i think he would move to another chevy team again. mabe hms (we know they would sh*t can casey in a hot minute) or maybe rcr? but it would have to be a high end team for sure.

tony’s a man, an American man. He’s not going to settle for some import. Thats clearly what he’s sayin in his comments, he’s waiting for the middle of the season, meaning, if he turns out like mike waltrip, he wont be back. Howeer if he finds a miracel in suchi power then, well he might just look past it.

  9. 9 Sam

I just about everyone agrees on this one. The bottom line is that Tony wants to win and If cannot do that in a TOYO, then he will move back to chevy.

You people misread what I said. He will Retire from FULL TIME Cup racing. He has said in the past that once he wins the 500 there is nothing left for him to win in the Cup series. If he wins the 500 He will leave FULL TIME Cup racing at the end of his current contract and he’ll do what Schrader does, race anything and everything year round.

yeah fisha, ive been saying that for a while too. i want to see it happen, but besides the all star race which means nothing, there is nothing left for hime to do. cept be the first in modern era to win three different champ titles (wintson, nextel, sprint). wherever he goes though, i will fallow. also, you have to think about zippy. if he doesnt wanna reitre yet, what are the chances he’ll even stay if tony leaves. those too always said, they’ll do what the other one does. what if leaving just isnt in the cards yet. we’ll have to wait to see

Translated “I want to see how much Chevy will pony up”
Inside sources tell me that RCR is courting him and have
been for some time. He will stay at Gibbs this year - be
the BIG FISH for Toyota - win the first Toyota race etc.. and
then go back to where he belongs.. In a Chevy!

Thats why he drove Mopars for years even when he was with Chevy. Smoke is a car guy not a ‘This brand, or this brand’ guy

I thank that Tony would be a good driver for RCR I feel sure that Richard could find him a car
to drive all he would have to do is just say the word

I think Tony will do whats best for Tony and we have no idea what that is until he tells us.

  17. 17 Lee

Tony isnt retiring or gonna just run half a season give me a break hes not even 40 he’ll be racing full time in cup at least 8to10 more years.

  18. 18 Lee

And whats the hurry anyway to sign an extension, hes got 2 years left that would be the last thing on my mind right now.
