Stewart in hot water again after uttering obscenity on camera-UPDATE 2
Quote selected text Published September 30th, 2007 in NASCAR News
UPDATE 2:
Tony Stewart will not be penalized for an obscenity uttered during a live ESPN2 telecast of practice Saturday at Kansas Speedway, NASCAR Vice President Jim Hunter said Sunday afternoon.
Stewart was leaning into the driver window of Robby Gordon talking to him and when he turned to leave, he used an expletive in asking the camera to get out of his way.
The microphone, which was on the camera, picked up the audio although the broadcasters were also talking at the time. The curse word was audible but wasn’t totally clear.
ESPN2 immediately apologized on the air.
“At the present time, I don’t think there will be any penalties coming down as a result,” Hunter said. “There were some very unusual circumstances surrounding that incident. We will just move on.”
Hunter said the situation was different than where drivers have been penalized points for cursing during live interviews. Juan Pablo Montoya was penalized earlier this year for an obscene gesture but did not lose points.
“It wasn’t a live interview and he didn’t know that they were live,” Hunter said about the Stewart situation. “It was just a cameraman and he was walking away from a conversation that had taken place.”

UPDATE:
Tony Stewart could face his second points deduction this season for using vulgar language after telling a cameraman to “get the f– away from me” during an ESPN2 broadcast shortly after the first Nextel Cup practice ended Saturday morning at Kansas Speedway.
NASCAR officials requested a videotape of the exchange and said they were investigating the matter. A penalty could damage a bid for a third championship by Stewart, who will enter Sunday’s Lifelock 400 trailing Jeff Gordon by two points in the Chase for the Nextel Cup standings.
Stewart was docked 25 points and fined $25,000 for saying “bull–” in an ESPN interview after winning the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. He was fined $10,000 and placed on probation through Dec. 31 for skipping media obligations after finishing second at Phoenix International Raceway on April 21. ESPN broadcaster Dr. Jerry Punch apologized to viewers after Stewart’s latest transgression. “It was an unfortunate incident,” ESPN spokesman George McNeilly said. “The tape speaks for itself. In our view, the photographer was doing his job.”

NASCAR officials have yet to comment about Tony Stewart uttering an obscenity during the ESPN2 telecast of the Saturday morning Nextel Cup practice session at Kansas Speedway.
Stewart was talking to driver Robby Gordon when he was approached by an ESPN camera operator. Stewart turned and started to walk away when he looked at the camera operator and said: “What? Get the [expletive] away from me.”
NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said he would discuss the situation with NASCAR officials before making an official statement.
Stewart, who hasn’t commented about the incident, has had several conduct-related problems this season. He was placed on probation by NASCAR in April for failing to fulfill in media obligations after the race at Phoenix.
- Petty will not receive penalty for on-air obscenity
- Montoya could be penalized for obscene gesture
- Stewart likely to be let off hook, Montoya under review
- Several drivers say the track wasn’t ready for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race
- Hylton lands a sponsor for Talladega

get the what out of here? f*ck or hell or what? I need to know
Don’t know for sure, but it’s my understanding it was the ‘f’.
Sometimes I just don’t understand him! Why would you do that? He knows the drill, it’s like he wants to get in trouble. He hasn’t had a problem in a while so he figures he needs to get that bad boy image going again. Just can’t understand it.
He needs points taken away or something to straighten him out…he always seems to get away with everything. Especially after last weeks pit road conflict with Paul Menard.
Screw the tv crews, the drivers are trying to do businesss, and the tv crews always try to interupt. And when ESPN interviews people all they do is report rumours as fact, which is wrong. And another thing, its not like the “F” word is even that bad of a word, get over it people. And WTF doesnt ESPN have a delay for their live programs?
IF YOUR GOING TO SIGN ON AS GUEST DO NOT EXPECT YOUR COMMENTS TO BE READ!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stewart is like a little kid that just wants attention. He does this crap on the dirt tracks too. I hope Nascar suspends his a$$ for the rest of the season.
Stewart is a straight up ass*ole, Ive met him in NH. he was horrible to my friend who in a wheelchair. someone should kick his ass.
this is the only reason i hate stewart, FOR HIS SORRY ATTITUDE! THEY SHOULD PUT A SIGHN THAT SAY MT. TONY EXPECTING TO ERUPT AT ANY MOMENT.
agreed with guest above me, i just cant stand how tony acts at time
I don’t blame Tony, I honestly don’t understand why people are surprised by anything he does. Just shut up and let the guy do his job and don’t stick a microphone is his face when hes tryin to get some work done. The guys goin for a championship here, let the man have some time to talk to his crew to get the car right.
he has and has always had a problem with authority
and that goes back to long before racing. It’s not
his fault. There’s hope and yet he must choose it.
God I love that guy and know exactly how to help
and it just kills me to see him doing this to himself.
You all know that these 12 drivers have got alot of pressure from car owners, sponsers and any normal person under pressure from all sides reacts different I would like to see how some of these people that say he should be penelized for it just remember people Stewart isn’t the only 1 that has cussed on air this year or any other. So all I’m saying think before you judge.
Eh big deal. People need to grow up about this kind of stuff.
well the camera people just need to lay off the drivers shoulder once in a while
Wow I’m sure you people say these curse words all the time.. like none of you have anger problems?
Honestly - I like Tony Stewart for his attitude. He doesn’t put up with anyones crap… I don’t blame him for not wanting to talk to the ESPN camera guys; ESPN does a crappy job when they take over their part of the season. All the drivers have there momments but it is like when ever Tony Stewart does it people start talking serious BS. I my self am a Junior fan also, but if he were to say it - people would probably either oneover look it or two just say he was having a bad day… yeah Tony should get in trouble for the ‘f’ word slip up… but seriously take points away? A little harsh for a Chase contender… -Ashley
FIRST OF ALL , DRIVERS SWEAR ALL THE TIME , WE SWEAR ALL THE TIME , SO WHAT , THAT IS THERE WORK PLACE , DONT YOU SWEAR AT WORK, IF YOU SAY YOU DONT , YOUR A F____ING LIAR . SO GET OVER IT AND LET THE DRIVERS DO THEIR JOB.

Ok … first of all my 4 year old ain’t at my work place …. but he is sitting in front of the tv watching watching some fool cussing at a camera … now when I want to take a picture of my kid and he doesn’t want it does that give him the right to tell me Mommy get the f**k out of my face …. oh I think NOT … but how do explain to them it’s alright for some nascar superstar to do it and get away with it … Just admit it … in AMERICA today there isour kids aren’t being taught respect for others … NOW DEAL WITH THAT !!!! and I never cursed once … but I bet you are …
I said it the first ____ing time he cussed, I don’t think it’s fair NA$CAR fines drivers for cussing. That being said, b/c this is his second offense, he needs a more serious penalty. Proabably 50-75 points.
THERES ATIME AND PLACE FOR CAMERS IN YOUR FACE I GUESS THAT WASENT ONE OF THEM
oh shut up…you’re whining just as bad as tony over a pointless topic.
If you stuck your head in a 4th grade classroom when a teacher wasn’t looking, it’s not like you’d hear any words different from what gets said to TV cameras..
ESPN is a cable channel? Is it not? Just like TNT and USA which all allow some sort of foul language during movies. I dont get the big deal. Heck its in the dictionary. And Im sure Tony didnt realize the camera guy was there and im sure he and the camera man are on a first name basis and maybe he dont like the dude. and maybe he thought the camera wasnt even on…. Do we have all the facts? NO! Were you people there? NO! So let a four letter cuss word go not like we all havent said it at one point or another. And plus there are so many other things to worry about … like when Jimmie Johnson is coming out of the closet…. JUST KIDDING!
Whats really sad is a lot of people look at drivers to be role models for their kids because they are to lazy to be a parent and teach their kids right and wrong and want someone else to do it. No one in sports should be looked at as a role model, they are human like everyone else.
If you don’t want your kids being exposed to the world and how life goes then lock them in the basement away from TV and newspapers. A lot of people stand on their soap boxes and are quick to bash Tony Stewart because he is real and acts like a real person. Yet im sure they would do the same in his position. Remember people sticks and stones here. Sticks and stones.

Heartbreaking. You think we care?
Dude, who cares if someone leaves a message as a guest? This page always used to remember me but now they made me sign up all over again. Get real.
About Tonys expletive, so what??? And to mommy up there who said she’s never cursed once, yeah right. And your kid was concieved by immaculate conception and you’re still a virgin right???? And mommy, please send your four year old to an accredited school. Your english skills leave a lot to be desired…
ESPN is a cable channel? Is it not? Just like TNT and USA which all allow some sort of foul language during movies. I dont get the big deal.
The big deal is that the FCC will not let you say the f word on National TV. It is one of the 7 Words You Can’t Say. If NA$CAR is to be consistent here, I expect @ least 50 points, since it is his 2nd offense.
So what if his obscenity was a private moment? It was still on the air, whether it slipped or not. Jr.’s S bomb a few years back slipped and he was fined, wasn’t he? Or how about Carl Edwards last week when his car was too low, something completely out of his control?
Maybe these a$$hats from ESPN need to quit ambushing drivers. Or at least ask him before trying to get him on camera. That will prevent 99.9% of these “offending” outbursts.
I think Smoke is one helluva driver who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Kinda reminds me of another very opinionated driver in Nascar history, who ruffled more than his fair share of feathers.
YOU KNOW, I THINK SOMETIMES THEY NEED TO CUT THESE GUYS SOME SLACK. THEY ARE HUMAN AND HAVE NATURAL RESPONSES TO EVERYDAY HAPPENINGS. THEY ARE NOT PERFECT. IF NASCAR WANTED PERFECT THEY SHOULD GET MOTHER THERESA OR GAHNDI TO REPRESENT THEM. I WILL BET MY PAYCHECK THAT THE FRANCE FAMILY DROPS THE WORD BOMB IN PUBLIC EVERY NOW AND THEN
AMEN donny.. you’ve got it
I was reading her post and was thinking through the whole thing, “Man..never cursed? BULL..and she should have gone to school, because her english skills suck..”
And who gives a crap if Tony gets a penalty? He is going to just get even more pumped up and win a couple races to get himself back to the top. That’s how Smoke works, any real Stewart fans KNOW that.
My mom’s SECOND graders have dirtier mouths. It’s America now; everybody curses without realizing they are doing it. GET OVER IT, PEOPLE CURSE! Ever turned on HBO? And on BBC they are allowed to say BS..
The British have it right..
Penalize Smoke, NASCAR. Do it. You’re only fueling his fire.
Tony needs to knocked down a notch. He thinks he’s above people in the media and 3/4’s of the field. If your not in his little click, then you’re wasting his time and you aren’t as talented. Nothing that a good whooping wouldn’t fix!
Also..why is it always a big deal when Tony curses? When any other driver curses unexpectedly and by accident, there’s no big deal about it. Oh, but when TONY curses, it turns into the ESPN/NASCAR Days Of Our Lives.

Actually on Cable you can say any word you want with any penalty because cable is “Pay” tv. The FCC only governs the Broadcast channels because they are free tv which gives the goverment the right to police them.
As far as what Tony said and people being mad about he because he is supposed to be a “role model”. The onyl role model a child ever has is there parents, and if there parents, if you kid heard Tony say that then it is your job to teach you child that you are not supposed to say that till you are older. If you cant do that then you are a bad parent and should loose the right to have your kids.
ok people need to seriously back up. and leave tony alone. so he said the f word! omg! break out the gun and take him out back to shot him! please tell me one person that has NEVER said a bad word. omg. i would like everyone to go to a public place, and then count how many times you hear someone cuss. sorry to break it to ya, but we do live in america and people cuss. its just a word…build a bridge and get over it. he shouldnt be fined, nothing, its bull to get mad over a word. its not like he is OJ Simpson and killed someone. he just said a word.
Why is it that (people) seem to think race car drivers should be roll models for our younger generation??
Just because they are on TV does not give you the right to EXPECT them to act the way
you think they should act.
Tony has said many times that he does NOT want to be anybody’s roll model. Period !!
He is hired to drive a car and promote his sponsors in a correct manner, YES but being mister perfect was not part of the deal or they would never have kept him so long..
Get over it (people) the drivers are REAL people in a real world.
If I am concentrating on a problem at work and discussing it with some one else and someone jumps in my face for attention you can bet I will utter something like Bleep,Bleep,Bleep because they deserved it.
SAM and George, Please don’t read this OK. I say this with the utmost respect for you, YEA !!!!!!
Ok … first of all my 4 year old ain’t at my work place …. but he is sitting in front of the tv watching watching some fool cussing at a camera … now when I want to take a picture of my kid and he doesn’t want it does that give him the right to tell me Mommy get the f**k out of my face …. oh I think NOT … but how do explain to them it’s alright for some nascar superstar to do it and get away with it … Just admit it … in AMERICA today there isour kids aren’t being taught respect for others … NOW DEAL WITH THAT !!!! and I never cursed once … but I bet you are …
i so agree with this. it’s the people watching as little kid’s that hear that, and that can bring influence by them picking up on that word. Also there are people that dont swear and nor want to hear it. i like tony and his attitude but when something that is brought to live tv he should definatly think some more before he says something because obviously thats the problem he mouths off before he thinks. just my 2cents about it take it or leave it
Once again its the parents role to teach their kids right and wrong and respect. Just admit you dont want to be a parent and are passing the buck to someone on TV.
You can hear the F word and numerous other ones walking down the street. I don’t buy it that because someones said a bad word on TV is going to rub off on children. Dead beat parenting is the one to blame when they cant teach their own kids respect and manners. Man up and do your share to influence your child.
The reason why people would overlook it if Jr had said it, is because he doesn’t have an attitude problem and hasn’t had problems like this in the past, besides the time he said the s word, but he wasn’t mad when he said that. Stewart does stuff like this all the time and he’s a jerk. It’s just who he is. Jr is a nicer guy and knows how to control himself.
I’m not a Jr fan by the way.
Tony was just trying to do his job and had someone up in his face. What I heard he wasn’t being interviewed so it wasn’t like he KNEW hee was on tv. Give the man a break. He’s been a sweetheart every single time I’ve met him
I am going to tell Sam & George, I know who you are, took me awhile, but figured it out.
I’m sorry, but I find this quite humorous! I’m sure most kids now days have heard 10 times worse than the
F-bomb. Hell if the truth be known, I’ve heard kids that use profanity worse than some adults!
People, it’s just a word…get over it. There are far worse “crimes” out there than dropping an
F-bomb once in a blue moon. LOL!!
Bottom line is at end of the day SMOKE could care less what anybody else thinks about him. How many people out there have kids that teach there kids to do the same, you dont see SMOKE always dressed nice and cleanly shaved like some other drivers. You know what the ironic part is that theses drivers are interviewed cause we as viewers are nosey and we have to know whats going on, so if anyone here should be blamed its the networks for spoiling us. I cant tell you how many times I have been at work and become pissed and said something stupid. As for the people who are so worried about what he said, my advice to you is is you have never been to a race dont go you will hear far far far worse in the stands in the parking lot and in the restroom. So if you are stuck up and want a fake answer from someone who has sold out to the industry go watch golf or tennis and let us “NASCAR” fans enjoy what the sport use to be before Brian France runs it into American Idol status and we have Ryan Seichrest and Simon Cowell giving us there opinion.
Any publicity is good publicity !!!!
he should be lucky they want to film him.. if it wasnt for the media and fans he would be holding his d1CK,

Ah alas but if only it were true : You see Kenneth has given us the anonymity of (GUEST) status…
this will be the biggest penility we have seen all year
He’s a moron!! If he doesn’t want to be interviewed (which comes with the territory, I might ad) then maybe he should find another line of work or go back to open wheel where they don’t care about interviewing anyone!!! He’s just such a bad image for the kids out there who actually like him and are his fans…….bad example and unfortunately his pal Denny Hamlin is trying to clone himself after Tony……guess Kyle Busch will fit right in over there…….poor J.D. Gibbs……wouldn’t want to deal with those 3 for any amount of money!!!!
ESPN can solve this problem very easy, dont show, talk about or interview tony and dont show advertisments from his sponcers ever again. Once his sponcers realize there not getting there $ worth from Tony the’ll eather streighten his mouth out or dump him and if he has no sponcers JGR cant afford to field his car and He is done!
I’m sorry but there are FAR worse people that qualify for me as poor examples for the younger generation. Uhhhmmm…let’s see how many come to my mind just off the cuff…
Michael Vick
Mike Tyson
Britney Spears
Osama Bin Laden…just to name a few.
Dropping an F-bomb at an inconvenient interview moment isn’t one of those poor example moments for me.
Tony Stewart has mental problems. Ok yes you can hear the same thing if not worst on the street…unfortunately. Should it just be excepted as the norm and say oh well, we can’t protect the kids from hearing such? NO! Tony Stewart should feel honored we allow him in our homes every week, via ESPN and to come off as such unappreciative trash, then I can only wish ESPN would honor his wish and give the #20 Home Depot car ZERO air time. I bet the sponsors would love Tony to run his mouth again. Why is it he controls his temper and his foul language on his own radio show? No matter if he wanted to be a role model or not, it comes along with the territory. As we all have grown up and taken different jobs over the years, certain things are expected of you and if Tony doesn’t want to play his part for the $$$ maybe he should go back to his stupid winged dirt cars like he keeps whinning about.
Oh yeah also donating the big bucks to the victory junction gang doesn’t buy you a ticket to be a jerk the rest of the time!
If someones mis-spelled words are the best excuse you have for tony’s actions then why even waist your time posting, That was the lamest blog I have ever seen.

There is nothing that states it is against the rules to mis-spell but it dose say it is against the rules to attack others on this blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m not attacking anyone. I simply posted a response to a comment that was posted. End of story.
For all you people talking about role models. You shouldnt be watching nascar anyway,,,You dont wont your kid hearing a cuss word, but its okay for beer sponsors to be throwed in your face every other commerical. So did you also explain to your kid how slapping another person is wrong, after kyle petty slapped at Denny. Maybe if you spent more time Being a role model for your kids and less time worrying about which celebrity isnt being a good role model you wouldnt be so worried about driver saying a cuss word when he wasnt even being interviewed.
There’s one problem with America and its the constant wimp-i-fication. Some people are afraid to rock the boat and they want everyone to be like them so they aren’t alone. Everything needs to be so politically correct and proper.
NASCAR wasnt founded by proper college educated men. It was created by bootleggers and troublemakers. Sure Bill France might not of been in any types of illegal operations or a troublemaker, but he found something and used it to get rich. Heck Alan Kulwicki was the FIRST man to have a college degree in the sport. So before people get all PC and get their panties in a bunch just sit back and read the history of NASCAR. You might find it wasnt always a family friendly source of entertainment. It was aimed towards hard working rough blue collar folk. I think Tony Stewart would fit into the NASCAR days of old and falls into a category of a dying breed. You can get further with a kind word and a gun, then you can with just a kind word.
This is getting pretty lame and away from the topic at hand.
1. Big deal if Tony said a word that almost every rapper uses in excess. I don’t see anyone trying to ban MTV yet.
2. If you can’t spell a damn thing (and unless you’re using the my-beer-was-about-to-spill excuse), then get off the internet and get Hooked on Phonics. Poor spelling shows that you don’t have the mental capacity to contribute in a positive fashion since you cannot even put together basic words and sentences.
And if you get made fun of for such, take it as a hint to educate yourself!
3. Nobody really cares if you post a comment as a guest. To quote the movie Jay and Silent Bob, “that’s what the internet is for, slandering others anonymously”
4. April made some excellent points about truly offensive “role models” that are readily accepted in our society today. Why aren’t people who are so worried about what children see denouncing these sorry excuses for human beings?
5. HOORAY FOR JIMMIE JOHNSON WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE 2007 SEASON!!!!!
Ya’ll comment back now ya’ hear???
