Stewart does not want to extend Gibbs contract this off season

Joe Gibbs Racing wants to sign Tony Stewart to a new contract, even though his current contract runs through 2009. But Stewart said Thursday he doesn’t plan to negotiate during the offseason.
“It’s flattering they already want to do this and get it done and out of the way, but I’m taking this offseason off. I need it desperately.”
- Gibbs to make move to Toyota-new contract for Stewart?
- Gibbs calls Stewart contract situation ‘a nuisance’ to driver, team
- Could Stewart leave Gibbs if they move to Toyota?
- Gibbs says Stewart will not be offered ownership in team
- Stewart could partner with JR Motorsports?

Can’t say that I blame him!
I dont blame him! Its not like they have a ton of time off as it is!! Leave them alone til Feb.!!!
What do you think he is going to say… Yeah I have a short period time that I have off lets talk NASCAR… LET them be!!!
Whatever u do or wherever you may go-I will still be cheering you on!!!
I have a feeling he won’t be happy with Toyota and he’ll leave Gibbs after the ‘09 season.
Oh and how much of a riot would it be if he went to Hendrick! ha!
I wonder if this is a sign of his discontent with Gibbs or NASCAR or both… Or maybe he’s just resting and EATING.
Kateyn
Casey Mears’ contract is up in 09……mmmmmmm wouldn’t that be a Hoot??
LOL Katelyn!!!

Let see Johnson, Gordon, Jr., and Stewart all under Hendrick’s belt in ‘10… I can see the headlines now…
“History has been made as Team Hendrick has just won every race for the 2010 season!!”
That would be the ultimate super team!!!
I think at this point we all have to remember that the circumstances may change between now and the engd of 2009. There may be better options for Tony at that point. Signing drivers years in advance can hurt careers.
then hendrick motorsports would definitely be the “yankee” team of NASCAR!!!lol
Nah, he won’t go to Hendrick.. doesn’t spit and polish that well. Can you say RCR? They
have room, run Chevy’s and don’t mind the temper.. perfect fit!

He has to be worried! Gibbs is one of the best but Tony wants another championship. RCR is more his style.

No, no, not Hendrick…only 4 drivers per team for Nextel/Sprint …and I don’t want to give up one of the guys I like to cheer for Tony (nothing against him personally —- but I perfer Jimmie Johnson hands down …and Jeff & Casey too for that matter)
Eh — but what happens will I guess LoL

Haha… France and Helton would sure have their work cut out for them if that were to happen. Hendrick supporters would probably be the only ones watching–haha. But then again–Rick has Gordon and Jr–the two “superstars” of the series under his roof already.
Seriously every friend I have that doesn’t watch NASCAR has only heard of Jr and Gordon.. sometimes Stewart–and then Edwards because of me, but that’s the only reason.
Think about putting Tony under the HMS tent, hahah.
And sure RCR might be a good fit and Tony and Kevin are good friends but look back to the past few races–Kevin was getting verrrrry irate with Mr. Stewart, lol.
That would create some drama.

I would say it’s in this order:
1) He wants to see how the Toyota thing goes before he gets locked in driving them long-term
2) Discontent with NASCAR in general
3) Discontent with Gibbs? (don’t know why, though)
Then again, you’re probably right in that he’s just wanting time to sit at home packing down the Big Macs, Ding Dongs and Schlitz.
Take this for what it is, after being on the road talking/being involved with NASCAR for 40 some weeks he just wants some time to chill and have nothing to do with racing.
I think Tony is just enjoying his off season and possibly thinking of what his 1st love was (dirt track)
as NASCAR seems to be getting more POLITICAL every day. Surely not much fun anymore-plus burnout due to
all the rules (seem to be made up as they go sometimes). If not for Tony, I wouldn’t be watching as
often-I do know that!

Don’t be mistaken! If toyota is not competetive he will leave.

Yeah I know, but..
If he wins the 500 this year or next year, he’ll leave NASCAR after his contract is up. (probably not leave fully, but go to a limited “I race where, when, & What I want to race” schedule)
GM will pay me more to join a GM team
Hes got 2 years left why worry about that crap now I wouldnt the seasons long enough already drivers need to spend time with family and things an forget about nascar awhile.
He would not go to Hendricks. I can see him going to RCR.
He’s just playing games like he always does. What a headcase baby. Hundreds of good drivers out there looking for rides and this guy wants to play contract games. Waah. I hope Gibbs lets him go.
Toyo will make great strides with Gibbs in 08, but I bet Busch and Hamlin both outperform Stewrat.
Obviously-you are not a Tony fan. He has (2) TWO years to make up
his mind. He is in his off season, give him a break-he doen’t want
to talk business. He has plenty of time….
this is just one of those things that the media announces because they have no other news to announce. its not important, but its better than nothin. so post it.

Look i am not a big tony stewart fan, but he can really drive a race car, and I mean any kind of race car. I would gladley put up with his off the wall personality. He also does a great job for his sponsers.
Stewart just wants some rest from the monotonous nascar life during the offseason…leave him be and watch him run dirt track races like the chili bowl….im sure he will run it again this year like last. and he has plenty of time to decide if he wants to extend or not…his contract is over in 09 not in 08 that gives him 2 years to tell gibbs hell stay.
This tells me it all depends on Toyota. If Gibbs can’t produce with the rice burner, Tony will do all he can to get out. Can you blame him?
Leave him alone, he needs the time off from the busy schedule that NASCAR runs….can any of us blame him for wanting time to himself?

I definately dont think this is just resting this off-season. He’s wanting to see how well Gibbs does with Toyota, and if they aren’t up to par, Gibbs can say “Bye-Bye, Smoke”.
BFDracing
i think you mite have a good part of it.
he needs to wait and see how those toy cars run
