Tony Stewart got into the back Gibbs teammate Denny Hamlin in last nights’ Pepsi 400 at Daytona sending both drivers into the wall and out of contention for victory.
Stewart took little time pointing the blame squarely at Hamlin.
“The No. 11 [of Hamlin] just stopped for no reason, right in the middle of Turn 4. I’m sure he was getting tight because for three laps in a row we were catching him through the center and the exit of the corner,” Stewart said. “All of a sudden he just stops on the exit of [Turn] 4 in front of 42 cars and I guess expects all of us to drive around him. I don’t know. It’s tore up two really good race cars. He tried to crash us on Friday in practice and didn’t get it done so he finished it off today.”
Hamlin seemed surprised by Stewart’s remarks and then gave his version:
“I didn’t get to see it but I definitely felt a tap from behind,” he said. “The cars were starting to lose their handle there and I don’t know, just trying to hang on. It’s just one of those things. It’s superspeedway racing.
“… I definitely had my foot in the throttle. My car had a little bit of a wiggle there but I think Tony was a little bit closer to me than what he expected or he was closer than he was the lap before and I think maybe if he was trying to get underneath me it just got hung right there in my bumper and got into us. I was still OK, had it saved, but I think somebody was right there on him probably and he got into us again so it’s ‘Oh well.’”

Like Gordon never makes mistakes and never whines… Tony was riding too close and Hamlin’s car obviously wasn’t handling well. The track wasn’t very conducive to handling for anyone last night, for whatever reason. No one really realized that until after the first few incidents. Tony always pushes hard. I guess this serves him right because he wanted to race for the lead instead of ride.
well that is fine, but he should at least own upto his screw ups. I’/m just tired of listening to him whine cuz it’s always someone elses fault. Stewart never does wrong. Mistakes happen, but at least take responsibility for it when you know you’re wrong.

Funny how I’m always hearing about Jeff being the whiner, well this year the only one’s whining or Tony and Denny oh and maybe that is because they are having a tough season. Well that is usually when they whine, all the drivers. Not just Jeff, this isn’t about Jeff Breanna, you always bring it back to that.

People really piss me off when they come on here and bitch about drivers and how much they ‘cry’. Gordon and Stewart are 2 of the greatest drivers NASCAR has seen. No one on here has done that, nor were and of you in their position for these situations. You have your own opinion of what happened but only they know what really happened so quit complaining about what they say because more times than not, they are correct.

It was just because they shoved a mic in Tony’s face right after it happened. He’s not convinced until he sees the facts. They conveniently didn’t show him the video and they cornered him with the questions. What do you expect? He was racing hard and he was suddenly out of the race. That’s traumatic for anyone. Especially someone like Tony who strives for competition and loves Daytona.
I guess if Tony said, “I really don’t care if I win or not,” that would be better, huh?
So, let’s say he’s a jerk… Why did he donate millions to Victory Junction and want no recognition? Why would he do nice things for other people who have lost loved ones and expect nothing? Some jerk huh?

I think Tony needs to be suspended for five years not only for what he did to his own team mate but everyone else as he always claims it was not his fault. The Daytonia accident was clearly his fault he clearly got into the back of Denny and wrecked his own teamate the only good thing was it wrecked him to to bad not worse so he could not race ANYMORE.
I think the Man is a menace and should be thrown out of the sport let him go back and race open wheel. It was clearly his fault and I think he should be fired by Joe Gibbs

I live 3 hours away from the track in south FL.. well..the trackpass was free for the Pepsi 400 on Nascar.com.. I had it on and I was listening to Tony’s audio and watching his car…then he crashed. Then I put on Jr’s audio and HE crashed. Then I put Harvick up on the screen to watch his car.. and he had problems. Then Axel finally said to me, “hey..you could make this work to your advantage. Go for Montoya.” So I did..and, guess what, HE CRASHED! Haha.. I guess I have some crazy NASCAR energy coming out of me and traveling to the track and causing trouble >_
It amazes me how some people live to see Tony react to a situation so they can throw in their 2 cents. It’s almost like you people cant wait for Tony to be in the news so you can put on your holy “holier then thou” BS. I like Tony Stewart, as a person and a driver he is great. With that said, this time and YES other times he tends to mouth off to much about the other guy being at fault but as Alex Foley said, stick a mike in his face when he is mad and just about anything can come out and did.
There is no doubt that Tony just like a few other unnamed good drivers needs a handler around when they are being interviewed to muzzle them.
After reviewing the tape a few times I’m sure his attitude toward what happened will change. It usually does.
Joe Gibbs job is to read people and you can be sure he is very good at it. He would not have kept Tony around this long if he thought Tony was incompetent as a driver or as bad a person as many of you are quick to mark him as.

Oh yeah, while it is honorable to give money to charities & especially as much as Tony gives, that in it self doesn’t make Tony a “good guy”. It’s how he handled himself & should of handled himself on t.v. in the interview that makes the bigger impression. Making huge donations isn’t the deciding factor on whether a person is good (although it is a good thing to do). Having an exemplary attitude is.

to not try and pull their head out atleast an inch or two so they could see a
little beacon of reality.
And hypocrisy is just wrong. Suddenly you’re “Yayyyyy Jr”. Man. You bashed him
atleast every other post for how long? And I don’t pay enough attention to
Gordon to notice if he takes out teammates, though I wouldn’t be surprised, but I
do remember him whining when they wouldn’t move over and let him win. I’d
rather have a guy with enough of a competitive spirit to move somebody over,
teammate or not, than a baby who expects his “teammates” to let him win.
In the end, the only one who really has a say and SHOULD be concerned is JGR. Everything else is speculation, hearsay and opinion.
I just love how racing has gotten to this point. I can remember when we all had to wait for the next issue of Speed Sport to find out what happened and by then, everything was all said and done. It’s just a TV ratings issue. Accident on track and lets build some drama out of it. (Look at TNT’s tagline - “We Know Drama”.)

It was to early in the race for Stewart to be pushing that hard ( which resulted in taking himself and team mate, along with other drivers out ) but to come off the track and try to dog your team mate as bad as Tony did. Bet Gibbs wasn’t happy at all and who could blame him. EVERY driver has whined at one point or another, I’m not much for Stewart but will cheer him or anyone else on as long as they beat the Busch Brothers, however, I do have respect for Tony Stewart for the race he put on at his own track and all proceeds went to Victory Junction Gang but that’s about all he gets respect for. Stewart needs to be careful cuz there are some dirty racers out there that will get him back ” by accident”… Then we’ll see him cry some more….
