Stewart and Yocum to help out Shepherd with tires at Richmond

Morgan Shepherd’s Faith Motorsports Dodge will hopefully be making a lot more trips around the Richmond International Raceway this weekend, thanks to the generosity of two of the veteran driver’s modern-day heroes. Two-time Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart and broadcaster Matt Yocum will provide tire sponsorship to the #89 team this weekend in an effort to help Shepherd build on last week’s 13th place run at Talladega.
Shepherd was a surprise call-in guest to the Tony Stewart Live radio show on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio on Monday evening, and before the conversation between Shepherd and the two hosts was over the duo had come aboard as tire sponsors for Friday night’s Lipton Tea 250 at Richmond.
“You say you need some tires for this weekend,” Yocum said during the interview. “How about if Smoke and I each buy you a set of tires.” Stewart and Yocum said they would each set Shepherd up with a set of tires for this weekend’s 250-lap event at the .75-mile track at the Virginia State Fairgrounds. Stewart followed up by saying he would provide as many tires as Shepherd might need this weekend. Stewart went on to talk about how many modern-day fans of NASCAR don’t appreciate the personal dedication that Shepherd and many other racers from his era put into the sport. “I know how much you put into it personally and I can appreciate it,” Stewart said. “We’ll make sure you have plenty of tires for this weekend.”

This is such a nice story. Morgan’s a nice man and has been around this sport for a long time. Maybe this will give all the Stewart-haters a reason to reconsider Tony and all the generous things he does away from the track. Ah, who am I kidding. Way to go, Tony! Way to
A classy move by a couple of appreciative fans. Helping a guy that has helped many. Outstanding! I donate money to Morgan’s charity every year. He started helping mentally challenged people when he drove for the Wood Brothers in the early 1990’s. He plays Santa to many of these individuals who otherwise might’ve been forgotten. They genuinely look forward to seeing Morgan each and every year. The last few years, David Browning, (I believe that’s his name) has gone on tour with Morgan. David makes a living as the “Mayberry Deputy”. His resemblance to the great Don Knotts/ Barney Fife character is uncanny. I am glad to see Tony and Matt help out a great human being like Morgan who has given so much to racing and life in general. I think Morgan was the last driver to put the #21 of the Wood Brothers in victory lane (1993). God bless’em.
Kevin Harvick also has been helping him by providing parts for free, as well as some of the KHI guys helping Shepherd out at his shop as well as the track.
Also of note this weekend the Holiday Inn in Richmond is providing free lodging for the team.
Also for $10,000 you could get your name or company on the Quarters for a 1 race deal, or if you buy a set of tires you get to put your logo/name in front of the wheelwells, a set of cup tires is about $1,800.
Hey Kenneth, maybe you and/or Jayski can go 50/50 on the $10,000 to get the sites names on his car. l0l
A Great story about some Great people in a Great sport.
