NASCAR Nextel CupSprint Nextel (NYSE: S) announced today it will continue its mission to bring fans closer to the sport by sponsoring the NEXTEL Most Dramatic Moment Award for the fourth consecutive year. The award is the only honor presented at the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Awards Ceremony in New York City that is decided solely and exclusively by the fans. The ceremony will be broadcast on ESPN Classic from the Waldorf Astoria, November 30th.

Throughout the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season race fans were able to log on to www.nascar.com to vote for the most dramatic moments from each weekend’s race. This list was then narrowed down to five moments that fans began voting for on Nov. 20. Votes can be cast on the website or by texting NASCAR to number 7777 from any Sprint or Nextel handset and following the received instructions. Fans can vote as often as they like to increase their favorite driver’s chances of winning. Voting concludes on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. ET. Standard text messaging charges apply.

“The NEXTEL Most Dramatic Moment Award is a great way for us to celebrate our passion for the sport while showcasing our technological capabilities through handset voting,” said Dean Kessel, director of NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series marketing for Sprint Nextel. “We appreciate the concept of the award because it allows fans to have a direct impact and leave their mark on the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Season.”

The 2007 NEXTEL Most Dramatic Moment Award finalists are:

# Jimmie Johnson celebrates his second NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

# Dale Earnhardt Jr. gets loose and hits the wall hard ending his day in the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

# Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart bang fenders and trade paint in the closing laps of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.

# Jimmie Johnson and teammate Jeff Gordon tangle in the closing laps of the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

# Kevin Harvick nips Mark Martin at the line to lead to an exciting Daytona 500 finish.

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup banquet is live on ESPN Classic at 9 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 30. It immediately reairs on ESPN2 at midnight.

I like the idea of the the fans voting on this awards, that’s the way its been for a while, but there is one thing that fans should notice right away, that the NASCAR Awards banquiet on the 30th is being televised live on ESPN Classic…what? Who thought of this one, somebody dropped the ball. I did check to see if it would repeat the airing on a station I have an its on at Midnight night (3 hours later) on ESPN2. What ever happened to puting it on a real channel. I don’t have ESPN Classic, its an extra $10.
