SprintA new name for the Nextel Cup Series will likely be announced at a news conference Saturday at Daytona International Speedway.

The Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com reported in March that Sprint Nextel would likely change the name of NASCAR’s top series to Sprint Cup.

Nextel signed a 10-year deal with NASCAR to be the title sponsor of the series in 2003. Since then, Sprint and Nextel have merged and the Nextel brand is not being used in Sprint’s latest advertising campaign.

Anticipating further consolidation in the wirless industry, the deal between NASCAR and Nextel including provisions for one change in the series name during the course of the deal.

The sprint cup sounds like its a short race.

    haha

Nascar is bending over for nextel/sprint.

  4. 4 Andy

Andrew nailed it. Now when it comes to Nextel wanting something, NOW they can “change”.

But when Cingular tries to switch Nascar acts like they have a stick up their ass.

    I have a Sprint/Nextel hybrid phone…it sucks.
I can’t remember the last time
I haven’t had a dropped call. Unfortunately, I am bound by
contract. I now keep a TracFone (prepaid wireless) as a back up.
The TracFone GETS BETTER service than the Sprint/No-tel

Some of you people really have no sense at all, and know nothing at about what you’re talking about. AT&T had problems changing from Cingular BECAUSE Nextel is the title sponsor of the series. During their negotiations concerning the sponsorship (Winston Cup to Nextel Cup), it was stated that Nextel can be the only mobile phone sponsor within NASCAR, besides those that were already sponsors before the change. Cingular got to stick around because they were the sponsor of the 31 PRIOR to the change. Alltel got to stick around because they too were the sponsor of the 12 PRIOR to the change. That very stipulation in the contract stated that if one of the preexisting mobile phone company sponsors were bought out, that they could not change the name on the sponsorship, because that in essence is bringing an entirely new mobile phone company sponsor in.

The one thing that you people need to realize is that Nextel paid NASCAR millions and millions of dollars to be the title sponsor of the Cup Series. Just like many other “Official (Insert Product Here) of NASCAR”, like Sunoco, which is why Harvick’s team got in trouble with NASCAR over the Shell sponsorship, it was supposed to be a Pennzoil sponsorship, not another fuel sponsor.

AT&T ran into problems because their sponsor change was against the stipulations of the contract signed by Nextel. Nextel is the PRIMARY sponsor of the Cup Series, not just one car…the whole series. They paid more money for those 10 years worth of that sponsorship than most of us will ever see collectively in our lifetimes, and now that they are Sprint they have the power to change that name because they are the ones that wrote the contract in the first place and paid millions of dollars to be able to call the shots like that…they can do pretty much whatever they want.

So…when the AT&T ordeal happened, they acted “like they have a stick up their ass” because they stand to lose millions and millions of dollars if they don’t.

Brujah, dear, you’re missing the point—
perhaps your sprint cell dropped that call!!

i now have sprint because it’s a phone provided by my
employers. i have more dropped calls and missed calls than
i ever did on verizon, and yes, i agree with tracfone!
i never missed or had a dropped call.

sprint cup sounds like what this year has already been
lots of missed calls by abusive authourites and even more
    changes with the new name

c’mon fans lets make enough noise to get
WINSTON CUP back and get back to racing!!

enough of the bull____ and changes….all i know is i aint seen
    a REAL race in YEARS!

    The ‘Athletic Cup’ us perfect!

NASCAR is big enough for everyone. The problem is because Nextel gave up a ton of cash to be the series sponsor, they thought they called the shots. Not so. NASCAR will always call the shots. Nextel is the big kid living in the NASCAR built home. He could let the other kids play in his yard but he won’t. There’s plenty of room for everyone to play. Because when the other kids go home, it’s still his yard. This is the problem NASCAR and Nextel haven’t figured out.

    Brujah:
    Dont insult my intelligence.

  16. 16 mare

    andrew and brujah—-
what does that have to do with the subject at hand!
while i agree, nobody really cares about the
at&t/cingular/nextel-sprint bull right now and that
its not the point at hand
atleast brujah stated his opinion rather intelligently

  17. 17 Andrew

You are mistaken, Brujah decided to express his opinion and call everyone else on this thread senseless.
NASCAR is trying to play god in the series by deciding what sponsors are allowed in and ones that arent. Cingular simply changed to ATT from a consumer stand point, which should be allowed to occur on race cars. However NASCAR decided they wanted to play god and deny them that right. But when it comes to Nextel merging with Sprint, everythings fine. Which isnt right at all. But thats okay. NASCAR isnt about racing anymore its all about the money.
