Ryan Newman has reached a verbal agreement to drive for Stewart-Haas Racing next season, a NASCAR source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Wednesday.
The deal could take up to a month to finalize and announce as negotiations continue for car sponsors.
Newman reached the agreement after Joe Gibbs Racing was unable to nail down sponsorship to start a fourth team. JGR president J.D. Gibbs confirmed on Sunday at Indianapolis that Newman no longer was a factor in the team’s plans and that a fourth team was unlikely for 2009.
Joey Logano, the 18-year-old phenom, is expected to step into the No. 20 car vacated by two-time Sprint cup champion Tony Stewart so he could become 50-percent owner of Stewart-Haas Racing.
Stewart will drive the No. 14 and Newman the No. 4.

Not too surprised by this. Hopefully they’ll get this thing wrapped up so I don’t have to hear about it non-stop for the next month!
AMEN, no big surprise. now they need to work on Martin
I just hope the boys can get along because they’re SO much alike. It will be nice to see the numbers 14 and 4 running up front again.
So Gibbs was trying to get Newman and take him from Tony? Sheesh…that is what it sounds like to me. Who knows maybe he is going in the 20 car? Supposedly this same source said Truex resigned too but he denied it. We shall see. Ryan and Tony will get along fine.
Lets hope it’s true this time
Doubt they will go to 3 cars just yet Howie.
Because 1 Haas car is borderline top 35, and if that car
Is in top 35 then it’s guaranteed a starting spot. Tony
Will use his championship provisional if needed
