BristolIn accordance with a new Tennessee state law, all grandstand, terrace, suite, and restroom areas at Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway now are non-smoking. This became effective October 1, 2007.

The General Assembly of the State of Tennessee passed the “Non-Smoker Protection Act” in May and Governor Phil Bredesen signed it into law in June 2007. The Act prohibits smoking in most public facilities, including “sports arenas.” Guests may still smoke in our concourse area, but grandstand, terrace and suite seating areas will be non-smoking.

I know a lot of people are going to hate this, but I love it!! When I went to Phoenix last year I happened to get unlucky and sat with a smoker literally on all sides of me! I had to lean away from the cigarette in my back (literally…If I would have sat up straight, it actually would have burnt me) just to be in the cloud of the person in front of me! It was lovely…

C’mon if you are going to a race you should worry about CO Poisoning from the exhaust more then you should about second hand Cig smoke.

  3. 3 chevetteracer

I am not a smoker, but i think that the government is starting to trample on the rights of smokers. With all the carcinogens in everything else, 2nd hand smoke is becoming least of our problems.

  4. 4 Lee

Thats pathetic,I live in louisville, Ky we have a smoking ban here I can understand the resturants and such I can go outside I can live with that but an outdoor event thats just wrong I mean the exhaust an tire smoke is worse than cigarettes god.

  5. 5 BFDracing

I live in NY we have had for years now, we were 2nd to Cali! As a smoker at the time of the ban it sucked! But
honestly people shouldn’t be smoking in close quarters of a grandstand. No stands that close at bar!

  6. 6 #1 jimmy johnson fan

This is bull sh**…they will loose buisness…

  7. 7 Marie

I could understand if you were in an enclosed area, but this is an outdoor event. Next you will not be allowed to smoke in the concourse either.

  8. 8 George Thompson Registered User

Listen i’m a smoker but everytime i go to the local short track my mouth and throat get coated with the residue of exhaust fumes and tire smoke so to ban smoking in an open air stadium is just stupid the other stuff is much worse and to take the smoking to the concourse is much worse because that area would be more confined

Yeay!!! This is the best news I’ve heard in a LONG time. Hopefully other tracks will follow. Seriously… comparing the exhaust from the cars or the tire smoke… those are actually pleasant compared to cigarette smoke! Besides, I haven’t heard of anyone being allergic to the smell of burning rubber. Allergic to cigarettes… that’s a different story. WAY TO GO BRISTOL!!!!

  10. 10 Khayess

I live in Tennesse, Bristol Tennessee to be exact, and this ROCKS! A couple of years ago I
went to the night race preggo, the cigg smoke made me soo sick. I think this law ROCKS! And
to the person who said that Bristol Motor Speedway will loose business…YEAH RIGHT! BMS is
the most popular track and its gonna stay that way!!

Actually Tire Smoke is more toxic then Second hand smoke. Also it is not a decision that Bristol made is is a decision that the State made.

  12. 12 Andy

I don’t think anyone is laregly concerned that it
causes second hand smoke. The point is, for people
who don’t smoke..IT’S GROSS. We don’t like the fumes
and smell right in our face. Have the courtousy to at
least leave the area and take a walk and smoke.
Don’t sit there with your hand in front of our face.

  13. 13 ben

HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IS THE BAN GOING TO MAKE WHEN RACE FANS GET
DRUNK THEY WILL LIGHT UP I AM NON SMOKER RACE FAN AND THINK THE BAN IS
STUPID IF NASCAR GOT ENOUGH COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS WHY NOT A NON SMOKING SECTION
SOME NFL GAMES HAVE FAMILY AREAS NOT IMPOSED BY THE GOVERNMENT JUST BECAUSE THERE
    WAS A NEED

  14. 14 Lee

Its outdoors its not that bad god,but if people wanna complain about smoking because there allergic to it then I dont want some woman sitting beside me thats covered in perfume it makes me sick gags me,so bars resturants sporting events etc…. should ban perfume.

  15. 15 tracey

i think thats not right, i am a smoker and not proud of it , its outside and you breathing other things like fumes from the car and other things,.if people dont like the smoking the shouldn’t go to the track ,its taking our rights away just like if they ban drinking, every thing your breathe now is bad for you… i could understand if it was inclosed place but this is outside, they should make half of the track for people who smoke and the other half for people that dont..

  16. 16 Fisha695 Registered User

Ben did you even read the article? The very first sentance tells you that NASCAR had nothing to do with it, and neither did the racetrack. It is a new Tennessee state law.

  17. 17 sushstewart20 Registered User

I agree with those who believe that there should be certain ’smoker’ and ‘non smoker’ seating…but to those who don’t smoke, the smell can be sickening. Okay, so tire rubber smoke and such may be worse for you than second hand smoke..even so, nobody wants a cloud of smoke blown into their hair, clothes, face, etc.. it’s utterly disgusting. Nobody is blowing the tire smoke into your face, and it isn’t a contant smell if your higher up in the grandstands. There are little kids who go with their parents to these tracks..I don’t believe in letting your kids go with you to a NASCAR race where they are exposed to more mature things, but seriously, have some damn courtesy for them. Their lungs are more suseptable [sp] to ciggarette smoke than those of us who are older. You need to get your cancer supply? take a walk and smoke. Who cares if it’s outdoors, people are sitting shoulder to shoulder in the grandstands. Just because you don’t mind getting lung cancer doesn’t mean you should expose someone else to getting it also.

  18. 18 Tex Registered User

Typical liberals destroying America. I don’t smoke, but you can’t ban it. What are you gonna do? Ban them from the track for it? Next thing you know, we won’t have an invocation b/c they’d consider that defying the “laws” against Church and state. That, and America being so retarded, they elect a Muslim as our next President.

  19. 19 Axel Foley

I’m really mixed about this one. I can totally understand the non-smokers being suffocated by the cigarette smoke but as a casual smoker it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s too bad they can’t have a smoking section in the grand stands. I think it’s a good thing (kinda).

But, what’s next? No drinking because some dudes chunk beers when a Hendrick car wins? No eating while watching the race because some bulimic might get sick?

  20. 20 Tony-a

Ok Fish… tire smoke more toxic? How many people are in chemo right now because of tire smoke? I would really like to see some figures on that. I work with an oncologist and I’m sure he would be interested in the study as well.

As for comparing cigarettes to perfume…. again, comparing apples to oranges. I know someone who gets physically ill when they inhale too much second hand cigarette smoke.

For the smokers… just curious… if the odor and smell isn’t that terrible, why do you roll the window down in your car when you smoke?

  21. 21 Khayess

Well it doesn’t really matter, the ban is there. In our great state of TN you can no longer smoke inside
any public building or structure so stop arguing over it!!

  22. 22 JAG

Next the Gov’t will tell you when and when not to take a DUMP !!!

  23. 23 Tony-a

    JAG-
The Gov. will only do that if they determine that it can actually cause cancer to smell the fumes off the poo!

I smoke. The other day, while smoking outside near my garage, I got passionately lectured on the perils of smoking, by a grossly obese neighbor (300lbs+) standing there with a wine glass in her hand at 2:00 in the afternoon. Of course she got a bit upset with me when I mentioned that my smoking was none of her business especially considering that she is hideously fat, and should worry about her own health not mine. Glass houses, yada yada.

I don’t need to smoke in the stands at a race, but I think it’s disgusting that it would be banned ANYWHERE at the track, where many thousands of non-smoking, drunk, obese future-early-heart-attack victims can be seen pigging out on mucho hotdogs, beers, snowcones, milkshakes, etc. Please. You’re fat, I smoke. If I go over THERE and smoke, away from you, no problem. But in the stands and isles I can’t get away from your fatness.

  25. 25 Lee

And my point was perfume makes me physically ill so it is the same, and at an outdoor event your not gonna breathe 2nd hand smoke,I think thats a bunch of crap anyway and I dont roll down my window to smoke duh if the smell bothered me I wouldnt do it.

Not everyone is fat. That is honestly a weak argument..

When you’re in an ourdoor even..you DO breathe in the smoke.
TRUST ME. I went to Daytona last year and sat through part
of the race inhaling smoke until the guy eventually put it out.
Have courtousy, and don’t smoke in the stands.

See that would be a valid argument…….. EXCEPT for the fact that in the state of Tennessee has a law that prohibits smoking in most public facilities, including “sports arenas.”

I have waited to let others reply before I did. I am a smoker and have been since I was 14 yrs old. I am now 43 yrs old. Never in my life have I seen so many non smokers whinning. I mean literally…When did all this start? Tennessee’s Govenor has done nothing but hurt the citizens of this great volunteer state since he took office. He killed our healthcare system, now he’s starting on everything else. I stay at home, because I refuse to bend to these on going laws. Why the h*ll do I want to go to a place that serves alcohol, but I can’t light up? Why do I want to spend my money at a place where I can’t be comfortable? I don’t and I won’t, plain and simple. If all smokers would stand up for themselves and stand by their standards of living…the retail bizz would go under fast! When fast food places started no smoking…I quit going in to eat. I quit going to Kingsport’s funfest which is outside ina football stadium to see concerts due to no smoking. I may be one person, but I will fight for my rights as an american citizen. I don’t like alot of things, but I don’t go around asking the d*amn government to stop them from doing it! Any smoker who drinks will not attend such events and go without cig.’s for hours just to satisfy a few whinners. Keep your *sses at home and watch the race if you don’t like fumes from smoke, and please give me a break…you can’t stand cig. smoke, but the fumes from all the gas and tires don’t bother you? lolol’s…That’s a lie if I ever heard one. Like I stated in posts before and I’m still staying true to it…Nascar went to H*ll when Winston was forced out!
Here’s an example of rules ok…Schools stopped making it maditory for kids to have Physical education for an hour a day some time ago…then look what happened…Childhood obesity!
Now they blame the fast food chains for their value meals and such…haha…It’s all due to no exercise in schools, no recess periods for kids to play with each other like we did in school and play after school…now it’s..kids go home to no parents, watch tv, play video games and get on the computers all evening and night and schools push computers all all kids from 1st grade on up! They have no time to be kids! Kids should b outside playing and running and riding bikes like our generation did! When you go to your next Nascar race…look around at the obese kids feeding their faces and drinking 5 to 6 soda’s in a 4 hour period…it’s gross! But whatever you do,,,don’t say anything to the parents…you may get sued for speaking your peace. This country has gone to h*ll in a hand basket. I know this is a long post, but stuff really p*sses me off. I stand up for what i believe in and if others did the same,…this world would be a much better place to live! When you go to a concert…you go to stand up and have fun and to sing along with your fav. artist or band, but then you’re told to sit down…that you’re blocking anothers view, haha…If I want to watch video’s…I’d stay home! Grow up America!
I’m gonna stay home and drink my beer and watch tv in peace and smok’em too!

Just got in from Texas Motor Speedway and had a blast. Weather was perfect, seats were great
and the race was very exciting. However, I won’t go back till TMS is smoke-free.
I got on this web site to see if there were other fans that felt the same.
People were smoking all around me and it was impossible to breath at times. Sorry smokers,
but your habit is very offensive to those not accoustomed to breathing cig smoke.
Pubic smoking is crazy. I don’t care if you want to smoke as long as your not asking
those around you to join in. Nascar should support bans at racetracks and promote places
for smokers to light up. I know smoking is an addiction,I have never smoked in my 46 years
and I’ve never missed it so I can’t really relate. Nascar is a great sport and it is growing
into the most popular spectator sport in America. Fans from all walks of life are discovering
what a great sport this is. As the rest of the nation is discovering, smoking isn’t as
popular nor accepted as it used to be. Let’s move foward.
I’m headed to Bristol Motor Speedway.

C’mon if you are going to a race you should worry about CO Poisoning from the exhaust more then you should about second hand Cig smoke.

Fisha695 this is the 1st time I seen that you commented on something right, you are right, you are out in the big open atmosphere, people complain about smokers, damn, the burnt fuel and tires must smell like roses, and for McColey Bristol has a waiting list good luck getting tickets there, might have to wait 10 years to get one.
I am wondering how smoke is going to bother someone in the big open atmosphere or are people just whining and crying just so they can see their name in print, I used to have a neighbor one time who used to call the cops on other neighbors just so he/she can hear it dispatched over his scanner, must be something like that, a kick getter, hmmmmmmmmmm, if you don’t like the smell of cigarettes/cigars/pipe smokers, stay the hell home don’t go to the races, Tennessee passed a law over smoking in public places, not over crybabies complaining about someone at a race track!!!

Wake up people and grow up and quit whining like a 2 year old, if you don’t like the smell of smoke, STAY THE HELL HOME !!!

Like Fisha695 say’s burnt tires and fuel is just a bad, I agree for the 1st time with Fisha…

I’m not sure why the smokers don’t get it. If I could get away from the cig smoke I would so as not to infrendge on their “rights”. But I’m sitting shoulder to shoulder with close to 200,00 other people so we’re not really talking about open air. I’m impressed by those who suggest that if we don’t like it we should just stay home. I assure you if I had a disgusting dependency addiction I wouldn’t ask others around me to “deal” with it. When you feel you just can’t cope anymore and have to smoke, then go down to the concourse with the other nicotine addicts. By the way, I love the smell of burndt tires, high octane fuel burning and two cycle outboard motor smoke. It is pleasant compaired to the smell of cigarette smoke. You think non-smokers are ganging up on you but the fact is, I don’t care what you do to your body. It’s your right to do as you please and I’m not advocating for you to change but just do it so as not to invade my rights not to smoke.

My dad smoked a pipe when I was growing up and everyone always talkled about what a pleasant aroma it was. It was easy to tolerate because it didn’t make you gasp for air the way cigarette smoke does. To non-smokers, it is difficult to be around. After your system becomes accoustomed to it I’m sure it’s not a problem. If cigarette smoke was easier to tolerate, it wouldn’t be a problem for me and I’m sure others. I’ve beat this to death and I’m ready to move on. How ’bout Carl Edwards? Come on Dale Jr, I’m ready for a win.
