Bill Elliott on standby if Riggs cannot race in Sonoma.
While on vacation with his family in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Evernham Motorsports driver Scott Riggs on Monday injured both feet while unloading his jet ski in an oyster bed.
The wounds required 12 stitches in the ball of left foot and eight stitches in the right big toe.
Riggs’ injury has caused Evernham Racing to make back-up plans for this weekend’s Nextel Cup Series race in Sonoma. Former Cup champion Bill Elliott is on stand-by this weekend should Riggs not be able to practice, qualify or race the No. 10 Dodge.
However, the team says Riggs will be racing Sunday.
“Jim and I huddled [Wednesday] with Scott, Bill Elliott, team director Rodney Childers and competition director Sammy Johns and we are going to Sonoma with the intention of Scott running the full weekend,” Evernham said. “But Bill will be ready for any scenario.”
