Report: Stewart to start team with Bass Pro Shops, Hendrick support

From Winston Salem-Journal: There has been no official word from either side, but it is becoming increasingly likely that Tony Stewart will indeed leave car owners Joe and J.D. Gibbs at the end of this season, to start his own team, under the Rick Hendrick Chevrolet umbrella, possibly with Bass Pro Shops as his sponsor.
If Stewart does depart, that would leave the Gibbses looking for a new driver. Joey Logano’s chances of getting the nod? Sunday’s Carolina 500 at Rockingham Speedway could offer clues. Logano is to start from the pole, and he could lap the field.
- Bass Pro Shops re-signs with DEI for three more years
- Report: Stewart to team with Haas CNC & become Cup owner, reunite with Chevy
- Tony Stewart wins Chili Bowl
- Mears to switch to the No 5, Earnhardt, Jr to the ‘No 25′
- Special scheme for Truex Jr. at LMS

Wow. That tells us nothing. lol
IDK Tony was hanging out with the Roush guys today……
There’s a certain logic and appeal to this story, but it still seems more like wishful thinking than reality. I imagine after Logano’sperformance at the Rock today that Gibbs won’t miss Tony for very long. Logano looked like the real deal. Granted it was just ARCA, but he smoked Schrader and drove a solid race.
I’m wishing Stewart signs an extension to his contract because he even said that he has no plan to stop racing.. but of course that doesn’t mean he wants to continue racing in NASCAR or series. I believe he’s the same age of Jeff Gordon and God forbid I don’t want them to retire anytime soon.
I hope the sponsor is off, Truex and bass shop are just good together
than again i said the same about bud and Jr
Just another “trouble-maker” motorsports journalist in the media attempting to manipulate perceptions with make-believe fiction… which is why these articles only have a 10% accuracy level (or less) by year’s end.
There’s not a snowball’s chance in hell he’ll end up with Bass Pro as the sponsor… that’s a fact….
Read between the lines folks… just more bias game-playing to warp readers minds…
well , i dont know about that but we had a great race today at the ROCK and Tony brought Joey Lagano to the checkered flag. hell always make a great spotter.
Tony was spotting for the Roush car (the kid driving it drove for Tony last year), or at least thats what they said on TV.
The rock race was good, I dont like how 10th place was 2 laps down but the races within the race were damn good. NASCAR get to work on goin back to the rock!
This is a real question and a valid one at that, but am i the only one who doesn’t think Joey Lagano is that good?
I dont think Tony would be stupid enough to start from scratch. It would take less time to fix an existing team then to build one from the ground up.

Well lets see he has been racing since he was 4 and at age 12, Joey won the Southeast-based Pro Legends national championship.[1] He spent several years racing various forms of pavement Late Model racing. NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Mark Martin has called Joey Logano “the real deal”. [2] When Logano was 15, Martin said “I am high on Joey Logano because I am absolutely, 100-percent positive, without a doubt that he can be one of the greatest that ever raced in NASCAR. I’m positive. There’s no doubt in mind.”[1] He was top driver in 2006 GM Racing Development Driver Evaluation program, which led to him being signed with Joe Gibbs Racing.
In 2005 he ran in 1 FASCAR Pro Truck Series race at New Smynra, started 1st and finished 2nd. He raced in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. He raced seven races in the Northern Division races winning once at Mansfield, two Southern Division races, and five Championship Series races.
In 2006 he continued racing in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. He raced in twelve Southern Division races, winning twice at South Georgia Motorsports Park and at USA International Speedway. He ran in one USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, Northern Division race and six Championship Series races.
A new 2007 NASCAR rule allowed drivers 16 and up to race in the Grand National Division, and Logano easily took advantage of the new rule. Logano finished the 2007 Grand National season with 13 starts in Busch East Series, winning 5 races, 3 poles, 10 Top 5’s, and 10 Top 10’s, and winning the championship with wins at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Iowa Speedway, two wins at New Hampshire International Speedway, and Adirondack International Speedway. He also has made 1 NASCAR West Series start, started 2nd and won. On October 20, 2007, Lagano won the Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale Speedway, leading 87 laps and held off Peyton Sellers for the win.
Joey is all the hype that Amirola had, but Joey also brings the skills to go with that Hype, HOWEVER I do think its a bit early to jump on his Bandwagon as a Pro-Racer. We’ll see how he does when he gets to Cup when he is no longer the driver with the best EQ on the block.
This premise is kind of hard to believe; I just read where Bass Pro Shops just re-upped with DEI for three more years (in the same newsletter.)
Just a thought.

If this were to turn out to be true you’re wrong guest tony and the president of bass pro shops jim hagale have become great friends they spend quite a bit of time fishing and hunting together, and as far as them signing with dei for 3 more years doesnt mean anything drivers/sponsors break contracts all the time.

Check the date on that… It was published July 8th, 2007. So they are still way under contract either way.

Check the date on that article… Published July 8th, 2007. It’s an old story, but BPS is still way under contract w/ DEI anyhow. I would be surprised if they bailed on DEI too, but BPS and Tony have had some history, and he’d be much more visible than Truex, I think. Then again, BPS and Truex have been together for a while too. Should be interesting to see what happens here, but this sounds like it’s probably just more crazy speculation.

Think again guest tony and jim hagale the president of bass pro shops are great friends they hunt and fish together,I dont believe the story but bass pro would leave dei in a heart beat contracts mean nothing in this sport they get broke all the time.
Report: Stewart loses weight; hair (finally)
Sorry about that date (July 2007) on the article I was reading. The date was so faint on the page, my older eyes just did not see it. Glad all of you caught it.
Well Howie, thanks for Lagano’s long and somewhat useless resume, it had nothing to do with what i asked, but Fisha good response.
I bet if truex leaves DEI then BPS would have an out of the contract. DW and Hammond both believe that Truex is gone after this year.
Either way it will be fun to see what happens.

Truex is being aweful tight lipped and seems to be smiling alot more lately, looks like TEI is losing another driver/crew chief combo.
