The Charlotte Observer is reporting that Regan Smith, who appeared to be left without a ride when Ginn Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. merged in recent weeks, may be back on track to join the Nextel Cup series fulltime.
Now that the Kyle Busch’s future is set at Joe Gibbs Racing next season, Smith has emerged as a candidate to join DEI as the organization’s fourth Cup driver next season.
“We think highly of Regan and are working with him on potential opportunities,” DEI vice president John Story said Tuesday.
Smith, 23, is already scheduled to drive DEI’s No. 01 Chevrolet this weekend in Watkins Glen, N.Y., in place of Mark Martin and is also going to drive the car in the Sept. 16 race at New Hampshire, Story said.
Before the Ginn/DEI merger, Smith had split time this season with Martin in the No. 01 and was planning a fulltime move to Cup in 2008. Shortly after the announcement of his promotion, the merger took place and Smith was without a ride.
- Mass exodus from DEI?? Regan Smith to be sidelined
- Regan Smith to drive the 01 for DEI in 2008
- DEI to stay with Chevy, Blaney to stay with BDR
- Regan Smith to run full 2008 Nextel Cup schedule
- Regan Smith to drive the No 01 at New Hampshire this weekend

Bad choice!
Better choice than Busch
The wicked step mommy needs all the help she can get.
Who knows. Could be a future talent.
What has this kid accomlished?
Anonymous, i can answer that question for u….absolutly nothing, here it looked like DEI was finally making some good decisions and then boom make Regan the fourth full time driver…bad choice
Hell Jack Roush hired Kenseth , Biffle and Edwards without hardly ever seeing them drive…so you never know.
I agree with Justin.
And remember Jimmie Johnson didn’t do much in the Busch Series (1 win) before he made it to cup.
Actually Tony Stewart pretty much did nothing in the Busch series. I know he had already done great in every open wheel series in ran in , but he was just another guy on the track in Busch. Now he’s one of the 2 best guys on the track in Cup. So you never can judge these things. Come to think of it Denny Hamlin went from local short track guy to Cup star in only a few years.
I honestly feel no rookie can be judge until they get a chance to click with a team. Not everyone can perform right out of the box. It took Jeff Gordon about a year or 2 to really come along. I feel he and Davi Ragan are both very talented drivers who just need to get settled
David Ragan*…had a little typo there
At least he will be cheap to put under contract, then we will see how good he can do here.
Moe, Larry, the cheese! Moe, Larry, cheese!
