Sprint CupWith rain falling Friday morning and a rough outlook for the remainder of the day at Atlanta Motor Speedway, several Sprint Cup teams will again be looking at the sky hoping for a dry or wet track.

Qualifying for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. EST, and the National Weather Service predicts 100 percent chance of rain throughout the day. Temperatures could reach the 60s, but could dip to the mid-30s by tonight. There is a 50 percent chance of rain for tonight.

With the top 35 teams in owner points from last year set in the field, 13 drivers are vying for eight spots.

If qualifying is rained out, Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch gets in as a race winner from the 2007 season. Michael Waltrip Racing’s Dale Jarrett and Wood Brothers Racing’s Bill Elliott get in as past champions.

Using the current entry list and assuming no one missed the early entry deadline, Brian Vickers (Red Bull Racing), David Reutimann (MWR), Michael Waltrip (MWR), Ken Schrader (BAM Racing) and John Andretti (Front Row Motorspots) would get in through this year’s owner points.

Missing the show would be Joe Nemechek (Furniture Row Motorsports), Johnny Benson (Bill Davis Racing), Mike Skinner (Red Bull),
Patrick Carpentier (Gillett Evernham Motorsports) and Burney Lamar (E&M Motorsports).

here on the TX/OK border 50 miles north of TMS, we got 9″ of snow.

I can only imagine what the track looked like.

If you remember to last year at TMS, we had snow the week before the race and tornados on race weekend, in april. Any race in this point of the calendar is topsy turvy right now because the winter to spring transition is so aggressive.

We got Mid 40s and overcast with rain in a few hours here in the Poconos.

I’m so ready for this whole Late Winter/Early spring time to be over. I want Sunny and 70 and then I’ll be happy… l0l

Yup, the weather is terrible here today. Don’t know about down at the track. I’m about 20 minutes north of it, and it hasn’t rained since this morning, so maybe they can get something going. Looking at the RADAR, I’m guessing we won’t see any more rain until later tonight. Hopefully they can get it in!

A friend of mine lives just a few miles from TMS. The area of the track was covered…I’d love to see an aerial view of it! 95% of it melted today.

If qualifying is rained out tonight, I hope they run it tomorrow morning. We’re still using LAST YEAR’S standings at this point to determine the field if it is cancelled. We all know who that would benefit.
