Nextel Cup to undergo name change to Sprint Cup?

Sprint Nextel confirmed Sunday that it is mulling over the possibility of changing the name of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series in 2008.
“As we have stated before, Sprint Nextel is actively researching the best action regarding the name of the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series,” said a Sprint Nextel public relations representative Sunday. “The name will remain NASCAR Nextel Cup Series for the duration of the 2007. Our hope is to have more information by late summer regarding our plans for changing or not changing the name in 2008.”
NASCAR officials had no comment on the possibility of a name change for its top series.

If it is Sprint Nextel, then why not just keep it Nextel instead of changing it to Sprint? Or maybe Sprint Nextel Cup? Why change it at all anyway? Just have Sprints name be there on the sponsors or something. It was already confusing enough when they changed it from Winston to Nextel… now that we are used to that they are going to change it again? Doesn’t make sense to me.
see my problem is how come they can change but the #31 team isnt its the same exact thing bc the contract with nascar is for nextel.
actually no, since sprint bought out nextel, they can change the name, it just depends on if they along with nascar thinks its a good change

changed its name so why does nascar have to change theirs,
just let history remain the same.
The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series…. should remain the same… now on the other hand… the “chase for the nextel cup”…. can change to the “Sprint for the nextel cup”. Sprint can plaster their logo all over promo’s for the chase, and let it be that……. more marketing for it will pay off both sides..

I personally like Nextel Cup. It just flows better. For some reason when I think of Sprint Cup it reminds me of a little league racing series or something lol
No matter what they do it wont matter to me as I’ve not
purchased anything at all with “NEXTEL” on it! It is to me
and will always be…”WINSTON CUP RACING”.

I maybe misstaken but I think there is a race type of car called Sprint Cars. If Nextel changes their name to Sprint Cup Racing (my opinion only) would that not confuse some people maybe. And if Nextel changes their name any contract they made becomes void, like Cingular’s contract because of name change. They should be a clause in the document for this. So if they want to cancel the agreement with Cingular, when Nextel changes there name everyone will need a new contract. Nextel needs to get a grip on life the racing owners need all the sponsors they can get it does not matter who they are. Just because you only put Sprint/Nextel on everything does not mean everyone will purchase that product, if you do not give good service, you will not get customers. I had Sprint for 3 years (suppose to be 2 year contract) ends in June 2007, I will change where I go, who I go to I do not know. The phone connection is really good, but they do not have good customer service. Took them 6 months of me complaining before they finally did something with a problem I had but in the end they told me to lie and say it just happen so it could be fixed. I am 45 have watched racing for 30+ years I am not a smoker never was, the majority of my life that I watched racing it was the Winston I never smoked, I was a Rusty Wallace fan I may have and still buy the Hot Dogs that he has as a sponsor but I don’t like Miller Beer, don’t like no beer that is my choice. So in final I don’t know what the big deal is in a Name.
