Nextel Cup drivers/cars roar through streets of New York

Even New Yorkers, who normally don’t show any recognition for the cacophony of sounds along the avenues of Manhattan, looked up Wednesday morning as a procession of rumbling NASCAR stock cars snaked their way through the city streets.
“This year was amazing, to come down Broadway and through Times Square and have the amount of people all around the entire run was unbelievable. I was blown away,” said four-time champion Jeff Gordon, more accustomed to vast grandstands of fans watching his driving rather than people on sidewalks only a few feet away.
Newly crowned NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Jimmie Johnson led the procession of the series’ top ten finishers on a police-escorted lap around Midtown that started and ended in Times Square, covering nearly 30 blocks and drawing crowds of onlookers.
The parade was held to mark NASCAR’s annual visit to the city for media appearances and the group’s season-ending victory banquet on Friday night.
Kasey Kahne, who finished the season in eighth place and was taking part in the championship week activities for the first time, was amazed by the turnout. “Is it always this crazy around here?,” Kahne asked.
