Scott RiggsThe National Stock Car Racing Commission has upheld the penalties assessed the No. 66 and No. 70 Haas CNC Racing Sprint Cup Series teams.

NASCAR penalized the teams for improper wing-mounting locations following an inspection during the Coca-Cola 600 race weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Each team was penalized 150 owner points, Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter were each penalized 150 driver points, and the crew chiefs for each team (Bootie Barker and Dave Skog) were fined $150,000 and suspended for six races. The car chiefs were also suspended for six races.

Haas officials did not contest the rules violation but argued that the penalties were too severe for the infractions. They also argued that the infractions did not involve illegal parts on the car and that the resulting higher wing location was a disadvantage.

“The Commission found that the infractions resulted from what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to circumvent the inspection process,” a news release said. “Accordingly, the penalties that were issued are warranted.”

The penalties were unanimously upheld in separate hearings Monday. The commission group hearing the appeal for the No. 66 Riggs team was Leo Mehl, Kevin Whitaker and Chairman George Silbermann. The No. 70 team’s appeal was heard, and the penalty was unanimously upheld, by Dale Pinilis, Cathy Rice and Silbermann.

Anyone know who ratted them out?

Doesn’t matter who ratted them out, the cheated, they got caught, and quite frankly I don’t think the penalties were severe enough, especially since the teams representative admitted that they had been using them the entire season.
