The Army National Guard will back Casey Mears in a Hendrick Motorsports Busch Series Chevrolet in 22 races this season, the team announced Saturday.
Mears will use the No. 24, a number not used by Hendrick in the Busch Series since 2002. The 24, of course, has been made famous by four-time champion Jeff Gordon.
All 24 of Mears’ races will be companion events to Nextel Cup races, beginning with the season-opening Orbitz 300 at Daytona International Speedway.
A different National Guard brigade or division will be featured at each race. The team said the Busch program will be used to focus on the National Guard’s local recruiting efforts.
