TalladegaNextel Cup Series director John Darby said bump drafting will be monitored more closely than ever at Talladega Superspeedway where the technique is used to gain ground in the draft. “Describing the what and how we police there won’t be any change in the rule,” Darby said before Saturday’s qualifying. “But there obviously will be more attention paid to it.

There may be more emphasis in the driver’s meeting about backing off of it and we’ll be a little more observant in the control tower.” Because the back and front bumper of the COTs match up more evenly than the former cars it’s easier for drivers to bump draft, particularly in no-bump zones that are in the turns and tri-oval, without spinning out the car ahead of them. Tony Eury Jr., the crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr., said NASCAR could play a big role in determining the championship Chase if it properly enforces bump drafting.

“It will be interesting to see how deep they want to get into that,” he said. “They could make a call that could decide how the championship comes out. Everybody out here will be doing it at some point of the other. It’s just going to be who do they get on first.” The penalty for excessive bump drafting could range from being held a lap on pit road to being parked. Either would be costly to a Chase contender. “It depends on the situation,” Darby said.

great now nascar is completely dictating the outcome of the race. Who is monitoring the monitors ? Why dont we add manditory pit stops and add turn signals and mirrors . Possibly a/c and a radio .

Like someone said several days ago, NASCAR will determine who the Chase winner is, by hook or crook. Some of you are to young to remember when they BOUGHT A STOCK BUILT CAR, and raced it. Yes they put in some safety bars, etc, but it was in essence, a car that you could go down to the showroom, or lot, and buy. That was STOCK CAR RACING. These custom built cars can’t even be driven on the street. The cars today are cookie cutter dup’s, and the driver’s are somewhat the same, so, in order to CREATE excitement, NASCAR has to pull strings to determine the outcome of the race. If the person they want to win is not in a position to win, they PULL a string, change a rule, whatever, and guess what, their hand picked car wins……..enough said…..this is NOT true racing, and the empty seats are the result of this system……I won’t pay the big bucks to see who NASCAR want’s to win. I’ll go fishing, at least no one has quite figured out how to rig fishing………all the time anyway….

Well I have to agree with u guys. Between the bogus hot dog wrapper for Jeff to win at PIR and the ever changing rules on bump drafting .Or how about the fine for carl edwards right rear being to low. How does that help. More empty seats should be the future. Make a rule sheet and enforce it.U never know what the fine or exception will be.
When the 7 post used to work up a car cost between 5 and 6 million and the 4 car teams are side stepped by smart bussiness men just trading exclusively with another 4 car team making them a 8 car team.
kinda ruins the idea. Heres and idea change one tracks they run at every year at radom . Dont tell anyone where that race will be and then we will see some excitement. Send them in with one days notice. Then they cannot plan for a year to race for an two hours.
