NASCAR slaps Edwards and Roush 100 points, crew chief fined, suspended for six races-UPDATE

UPDATE:
Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith’s statement on the penalty given to the No. 99 team following Sunday’s Las Vegas race.
“The bolt holding the lid in place failed in its purpose as a result of vibration harmonics generated by the car and the race track during the race. The bolt was secure enough to survive 225 miles of practice, perhaps up to 399 of 400 miles of the race and the scrutiny of numerous inspections. It’s a tough business for any race team to have to pledge $100,000, 100 points and a six race crew chief suspension as an indemnity payment to NASCAR against a promise forced from us by NASCAR that no bolt will ever fail its purpose under race conditions. We are currently evaluating whether or not the circumstances justify submitting to the unpleasantness of the appeal process, but from a competitive standpoint, we believe it is in our best interest to have Bob Osborne begin serving the penalty now. Chris Andrews, our chief engineer, will be at the track on Friday and Saturday to lead the No. 99 team and general manager Robbie Reiser will join Chris on the pit box Sunday during the race. We are confident that we have the depth of talent in our organization and the strength in Carl Edwards and the No. 99 team to overcome this penalty, should that end up being the final outcome of this unhappy episode.”

NASCAR has issued penalties and fines to the #99 team that competes in the Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rule infractions found last Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The #99 car driven by Carl Edwards was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment used do not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-2.1J (any device or duct work that permits air to pass from one area of the interior of the car to another, or to the outside of the car, will not be permitted.
This includes, but is not limited to, the inside of the car to the trunk area, or the floors, firewalls, crush panels and wheel wells passing air into or out of the car) of the 2008 NASCAR rule book. The violations were found during post-race inspection at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 2.
As a result, Edwards and car owner Jack Roush have been penalized 100 championship driver and 100 championship owner points, respectively. In the event the #99 team qualifies for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the team will not receive the 10 bonus points for the UAW-Dodge 400 victory used for determining the Chase seeding order.
Crew chief Bob Osborne has been fined $100,000, suspended from the next six Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until April 30 and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
[NASCAR]
- Roush appeals No. 17 post-qualifying penalty
- Earnhardt, Jr crew chief and six other teams’ crew chiefs suspended 6 races
- Unlike NASCAR, cheaters get slammed in F1
- Roush crew chief Osbourne to return to the #99
- Bolin to replace Reiser as Kenseth crew chief

damn. i new they were gonna get hit but i didn’t think it would be nearly this hard. i totally agree with taking away the 10 bonus points used to seed chase drivers, but 100 points on top of that seems a bit much. 25-50pts would seem more appropriate, i cant see this being in anyway equal to illegally tampering with the fuel, fenders, or wing brackets. guess that oil tank cover really does make a difference.
I guess this is the consistency everyone was looking for…
And when I said 100/100/$100,000/6 everybody thought I’d be wrong… l0l
What is the difference - with the six race AND the suspension from
Nascar until April 30th.. I don’t recall seeing both mentioned on crew
chiefs before… or am I being blonde? (Which I am lol)
this is retarded. way too harsh of a penalty for what was altered
this is absolute bull…..nascar is looking for consistency but in actuality they just seem to be on an extreme power trip. they seriously need to take a chill pill. watching anymore races this season would make me sick, so as for now NASCAR has lost another fan
Weren’t the Nationwide penalties for the same violation only 25 points?
jeez Fisha, they did just the opposite of what we thought they would do, Robby is in trouble now.
all the teams should boycott races untill NASCAR stops being so anal about the stupidest things. I mean an oil tank lid??? Geez even if it did help the car go faster…..wasnt the point of NASCAR being founded to prove who had the fastest car?? hell just rename NASCAR and call it IROC becaust thats what the cars are turning into
It says clearly on the outside > NASCAR 2008 RULE BOOK
Brent actually when NASCAR was founded a lot of drivers got dq’d because they altered their cars. There was some program on the history channel about it the other day. People Think NASCAR was founded to see who had the fastest bootlegging car, but most of the bootlegging cars were not allowed to race because of how much they were altered.
Howie I think Robby might actually get away with what he did, I mean it was legal by the rule book.
Right Drew! NASCAR can never be right apparently… If someone doesn’t get the same penalty, they’re playing favorites and they need to be consistent. If they’re being consisitent, than they’re on a power trip and they’re being too harsh. Make up your minds “fans”.
The F… NASCAR was NOT my comment!!!!
well he goes from first in points to seventh in points, Jack has got to be happy about that
ROBBY GORDON PENALTIES LIFTED!
Except fine increased to 150K…

Right on my friend… Gotta give credit where it’s due. Glad to see NASCAR being consistent, and I definitely like the taking away the chase bonus points! That could be huge in the long run!
Donny wrote:
Yeah I saw that and I don’t really understand why they are doing that though…..
yup thats good for Robby, and Dodge and Jim Beam will pickup the tab for alot of that and Robbys car has VALVOLINE on it this weekend.
Is NASCAR charging $50,000 for 100 points then?
Hmm
That scheme looks better with the 7 then it does the 10.
So when Roush Appeals this, do they win, get it reduced, get it upheld, or something else?
no Roush will not win the appeal, remember NASCAR doest like Roush, Hell when Matt won his championship NASCAR changed the point system.
sorry for not being consistant on here…. i think the reason why nascar doesnt like roush…is because roush has 5 teams while every other motorsports has 4 teams.. i mean 1 team over and roush has to be hated on it? i mean correct me if i’m wrong but it seems childish for nascar to dislike roush just because they have an extra teammate on the racetrack.
yeah but he has to dump ateam by the end of this season , he can only have 4 teams at the end of this year to comply with the new rules
JRT2003 wrote:
was it rousch who wanted 4 cars a team becuz of hendrick motorsports having 5…i might be wrong
Umm Roush has 5 and HMS has 4, and has only ever had 4 full time teams for awhile.
Well, it’s nice to see them follow their own guidelines for once. I didn’t think that lid made taht much of a difference, apparently it does.
They need to decided now if a penalty for something that does not enhance the cars performance warrants the same penalties as perfromance enhancing, like this one apparently is?Wonder when they plan on evaluating that one? LOL
And kudos for Robby mostly winning his appeal… most of them are never turned over, sometimes harsher penalties are given. Hence points back, stiffer fine.
yeah, who gets the boot?
BIFFLE 6th
EDWARDS 7th
KENSETH 16th
McMURRAY 26th
RAGAN 19th
thats a hard decision but i would dump McMurray
jr88fan, this does enhance the cars performance.
Howie doesn’t Biffle only have a year or so left on his contract or did he re-sign? Personally I think it could benefit Greg to go to another team, but that is only if its a good running team, which most of them are full.
No matter what driver goes, I am willing to be that the 26 is the car number that goes.

I think the writing is on the wall for McMurray.
actually at one point Jack was going to start 3 more teams and start a second company but i believe that has been scraped since the Fenway merge.
Nascar had to rule this way! Last year they set a president with Johnson, gordon, dei,etc…..
yeah i think him and Rusty will do something, they are best of friends and Rusty really likes him. he had a great start subing for Sterling years ago with only 2 wins.
I know it does FISHA.
I was just saying that they need to determine seperate penalties for each. A penalty like for things that are performance enhancing and then the lesser penalty for things that do not change the performance of the car. I don’t think its fair that someone who “cheats”, but isn’t altering the performance should receive the same amount in penalty as one who obviously has a leg up on everyone for what they have done to the car. Cheating is cheating, but they do not equal the same results, so why should the punishment?
I am glad though that they are “attempting” to be consistant.. right now. lol
there is no such thing as cheating in NASCAR, their are just grey areas in the rule book that the crew chiefs try to take advantage of. and they are looking for speed and downforce and anything they do has the same effect on the car, SPEED. so the penalties should always be the same. period. unless it was accidental like in Robbys case.
jr88fan, just about everything you can do that that NASCAR penalizes you with can have some kind of effect on performance an that is why NASCAR penalizes the teams. Whether its making something lighter, or making air get from one place to another, or using fuel additives.
Haha wow that statement from RFR on this is just… wow… They got caught cheating and they can’t weasel their way out of it and now they are just wow…. l0l
Typical. Like I said before… always divert guilt away from you, by blaming someone or something all together. LOL

I would get rid of Ragan…I love McMurray he just seems to have some bad luck
god how much bad luck can one have he has been in cup since 2003 and only has 2 wins.
Actually all this hinges on weather Biffle wants to stay at Roush. I think he would be better at RCR myself.
Hooah, to NASCAR for having the pearls to see through the BS of these teams bent on winning anyway they can.
As for the nuts coming loose during the race. Lets get real……….. That means every car was abt to fall apart due to loose nuts and bolts, DONT THINK SO !!!
This was part of the plan to add Down Force to the #99 Car, and it worked until post inspection.
This plate is so large and easy to get too, the bolts could have been gotten to by the driver, only kidding……… It is behind the driver though..
Here is a pic of inside his car

And here is an article that explains what it does when that is off.

Hey Fisha, thanks for the link to StockCarScience… Pretty cool site that I’ve never seen before!

McMurrary all the way on that descion. like you said how much bas luck can you have since 2003. And correct me if im wrong but one out of those two wins he got on a road course not a oval track but yeah to add to the convo above, NASCAR cant win for losing with some people. People cry and complain that NASCAR is unconsisant, and they want NASCAR to be consisant with their penalties. Now that they are doing this, fans are screaming that NASCAR is on a power trip. So what is it NASCAR fans, you cant have it both ways. Oh yeah way to go fisha lol you called it.
I just wish somebody would shut rusty wallaces mouth on nascar now,the 99 got caught plain an simple it wasnt a mistake it it wasnt a part failure,an if it was a danger to the driver then rustys team an the nationwide teams wouldnt have tried kinda doing the samething.
Hes retarded if fumes were going to bother the driver it would do it the same if cover off or left loose.
ok i have a question on this lol…. how is it Carl and the 99 team passed inspection before the race started and then failed post-race inspection…. im very confuesed right now about this cause i can not see how this is right……..
their is alot of time that that car sits on sunday after inspection . crew members can do whatever they want to do to that car on pit road before the race . it can be done very. its not like their is an offical standing by that car for all that time before the driver hops in it.
and as far as what Rusty is saying about fumes he must have forgotten all he knows about the car he is sitting in because their is a misinterpretation of this story. it is not like the oil is exposed and sloshing around in the car, the tank is still sealed ,this is just a lid.
Another COT violation, probably due to working itself loose/vibrating, from the race. They’ll say it’s a driver safety issue. And I’d like to see Rusty go Cup with Stremme and McMurray as a start until Steve is ready.
takin the lid off would decrease downforce. it sucks the back of the car down. the only time u would want to do that is at daytona or talledega. i kno i sure as hell wouldnt do it at vegas. but its a consistent penalty so i think its fair why they did it. robby got screwed at first for his deal but they turned that around for the most part. i think the fine should have been dropped tho
Strech read the article I posted a link to above, taking off that lives gives the car a 10% INCREASE in downforce.
Haha I just read an article by David Poole and he has so far the greatest quote regarding the excuse that Roush-Fenway put out. Here is the quote from David;
“Roush Fenway Racing says a bolt holding the lid down vibrated to the point it failed. People who’re in a position to know tell me that cover is supposed to have four bolts holding it down, and if they all shook loose the mirrors and steering wheel would shake loose, too. But what do I know?”
