NASCAR says don’t expect COT rule changes

NASCAR’s Jim Hunter, one of the sport’s top officials and a 40-year veteran at the tour’s tracks, said that drivers and crews shouldn’t be expecting any rules changes for the winged car any time soon: “At least for a period of time. “I think Robin (Pemberton) and John (Darby), they’d say ‘Let’s go some more races and see where we are.’”
Pemberton and Darby are NASCAR’s top two competition officials under president Mike Helton. “Actually I can remember a lot of guys saying they couldn’t run side-by-side in the old car, when they had a hell of a lot of downforce,” Hunter said. “Carl Edwards got out of his car today and said ‘It’s a great feeling when your hands hurt after a race.’ You just have to get up on the wheel. And that was the whole purpose of this thing … secondary to safety.”
The next midsize track debut for the stock car will be at Concord in a few weeks. But the Mother’s Day weekend race at just-repaved Darlington could also present some similar issues, with its sudden 200-mph speeds, even though the car raced there last spring.

Carl was right. They are long races and they are more challenging than ever. The best drivers will now truly be at the top.
It’s a Racecar not a Cadillac, and it should drive like a Racecar not a Cadillac.
I notice alot of the same drivers finishing in the top 10 in all these races that we’ve had so far.
THAT’S HOW ALL THE PICTURES SHOULD BE; TONY OUT FRONT OF EVERYONE

I think they’re right in not making any immediate changes. The race this weekend was a little on the dull side, but these cookie cutter 1.5 milers usually are. Most importantly it was safe! Once we’ve got a half a season in the books, I could see tweaking the rules or something, but they need to run more races and collect more data. Let Goodyear get the tires right so that’s out of the equation before anything else happens!
Like a lot of people are saying, maybe they need to get rid of the bumpstops. They’ve probably let teams sink too much money into R&D on them to just pull the plug and make them illegal at this point, so I don’t know what NASCAR can do. Supposedly understanding how to set up the bumpstops is one of the big difference between the haves and have-nots.
AS SOON AS EARNHARDT AND GORDON SQUAWK A LITTLE MORE THE RULE WILL CHANGE.
