NASCAR rules leave some (many?) shaking their head

Boris Said doesn’t understand it, and honestly, neither do I. Friday Nextel Cup Series qualifying at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International for Sunday’s Nextel Cup Series Centurion Boats at the Glen was cancelled because of rain.
Not postponed. Cancelled.
Yes it’s become standard operating procedure for NASCAR to scrap qualifying when weather gets in the way. It’s one more way NASCAR proves that today’s Nextel Cup world is more about the stage show and less about the competition.
The field for Sunday’s event was set by owner points, meaning 6 teams that showed up at Watkins Glen to make an effort to get in the show went home without even getting a try at making the field.
And by the way, two Nextel Cup Series practice sessions scheduled for today at Watkins Glen will go on in their entirety.
I’ve never understood just how NASCAR can so easily scrap what is supposed to be part of its competition, but yet practice, which has no bearing on the actual competition, is the sacred cow that can’t be sacrificed.
It’s as if these teams now in the show would be rudderless and lost on Sunday if a portion of their time on the track on Saturday was taken away. Are they really that bad that they couldn’t hack it on Sunday without all of Saturday’s practice?
Understandably, maybe NASCAR doesn’t want to take the time on Saturday to send 49 cars out to make qualifying efforts. Fine then, don’t do it. The top-35 in owner points are locked in the field already, don’t send them out.
Why not let the 14 cars not locked into the field, teams that invested time and money to prepare for and get to Watkins Glen, go out and battle for the spots remaining in the field?
Is there anything unfair about that? And realistically, how much would the Saturday schedule need to be altered to let 14 cars go out on the track and take time? It seems like the least NASCAR could do for the teams that showed up for their show.
It’s hard not to have sympathy for a driver like Boris Said, a guy who desperately wants to make it in NASCAR who has seemingly put on a focus on competing in events where his team can run at a somewhat even plane with the big boys.

I couldn’t agree more. I like the comments Boris made. It sounds like he really cares about racing in this series. Too bad NASCAR gets their feelings hurt so easy when a competitor points out a flaw in the system. Hope that doesn’t affect him in the future.
This is the 2nd time Boris has gotten bit by the rain out bug. And both times he would have qualifyed up front.
Hey NA$CRAP, pull your head out of your
Said Heads unite!!! I love Boris. I think the NASCAR world could use a guy like Boris in the show week in and week out. At least he really cares about being in this series while others, I’m not so sure about.
NASCAR does many things that just make you scratch your heads. This is just one of them.
time: 15 min.
you have 5 cars go out for 5 min. just like how the busch cars did it,today so they could have just gone out and did it b4 or after i mean there was cup pract. rioght after that
ian, i was thinking the same thing.
how many people constitute a riot? I think some select long haired people, about 100 or so if them if not more, need to mosey on over to daytona beach and sit down on the nascar HQ steps.
I think NASCAR should have taken the oppurtunity to gain money here. Instead of letting the 14 qualify on time, have a 20 lap race. the top 6 race on sunday, then we get the real talent not the ones who get one lucky lap.
All Nascar cares about is tv ratings and qualifying has the lowest ratings so we all get messed over.
As usual NASCAR shows it’s dumbness again and again……………
They could care less abt those 14 cars trying to make the field !!!
Now if it was a Stables that wa paying Billions of Dollars into They bank accounts, OH YES. They would change it up to get them into the race.
MONEY TALK PEOPLE and NASCAR’S God is Money !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
nascar doesnt believe in rain tires huh?
I was pissed! Sitting in the rain waiting for qualifying only to have it canceled and the weather be perfect by 5pm and perfect on Sat!
qualifying may take time, but eliminating
atleast one of the two practices and
running over for time is well worth running the race
fair and square for everyone involved.
another boo for brian and the boys!
