Newt Moore has had his suspension reduced from six weeks to two weeks for the No. 1 Phoenix Racing car having a loose oil tank reservoir cover during Nationwide Series qualifying at Daytona on Feb. 15.
The National Stock Car Racing Commission upheld the 25-point penalties for driver Johnny Sauter and team owner James Finch and fined Moore $15,000.
Moore became crew chief only three days prior to the event. He is filling in for Jon Wolfe, who was not with the team for personal reasons.
“In this case, the stepped, two-part encasement cover was missing a bolt in the top cover section, as well as being loose along the perimeter of the bottom cover section,” the commission said in a statement announcing the adjustment in the penalty. “The commission also decided that there were very unusual circumstances regarding the crew chief in this case.”
The appeal was heard by commission Chairman George Silbermann, Jack Housby and Cathy Rice. Phoenix Racing can appeal the decision to the National Stock Car Racing commissioner.
