NASCAR Not Granting Bill Elliott Champions Provisional
Quote selected text Published August 9th, 2006 in NASCAR NewsNASCAR’s official entry list Tuesday showed Elliott subbing for Mayfield, and the team later released a statement confirming the switch. It said Mayfield’s long-term future with Evernham is undecided - but his name had been removed from the company letterhead.
That meant putting Elliott in the car because as a former NASCAR champion, he should have been assured a spot in the field. But in a statement released on Wednesday, Evernham Motorsports said, “Unfortunately the timing was such that NASCAR will not provide us with the provisional.”
So far there has been no reason given as to why.

- Past Champion Provisionals will remain the same for 2007
- Past Champions Limited To 6 Provisional Berths

Bill Elliott should not be given a Past Champions Provisional. He is subbing for a team who is out of the top 35 in points. This is not his primary car, ride, whatever you want to call it.
